Jim Lynn and Peta Haigh are attached to the Hub ( ) which is funded seperately. They help producers come up with a business case for new DNA sites, and provide the technical and editorial customisations necessary to get it off the ground. As such, they are involved with all sites at the outset, before handing them off to their own editorial teams.

Posts in threads are necessarily a linked list. However, even there it would be possible just to re-link the surrounding posts to each other to excise a section - though tedious to do and seldom likely to be worth it for h2g2 with their method of hiding things instead. I have coded this on many occasions myself and I think Jim referred to it being possible (with similar a proviso on actually doing it) a couple of months ago but I'm not going looking for that thread too. I guess whether you perceive it as an administrative or technical task depends on both the quality of the adminstrators and the tools which have already been designed for/by them.

I think the point is that the tools to allow "mere mortals" to do this don't currently exist, and there is no business case to budget for writing them. It's just the legacy of how hootoo was developed; Jim Lynn was very hands-on, and happy to delve into the database, so the tools weren't necessary when he spent all his time on hootoo, and now that he's been promoted there's nobody full-time on hootoo who could either perform the tasks manually or write the code necessary to automate them.
