It's getting like that endangered species thing round here, right? When the population shrinks to the point that the gene pool isn't varied enough to escape extinction.
There are at least two huge new stories right now (Japan and Libya) and almost no intelligent discussion of either. And if anyone tries starting a discussion, in come the usual suspects, bleating out the same old tired claptrap, and they go way off topic and kill the thing.
Far be it from me to suggest that today's hootooers are diminished to the point of inbreeding...oh, all right. Possibly not that far now you come to mention it.
Do you reckon we could persuade the BBC to keep a few dozen of them?

I think you're harking-back to a Golden Age of h2g2 discussions that didn't exist, Pinniped. This place has always had it's fair-share of poor argument, ideological pod-people and posters who start with a conclusion and work their way towards it. And, to be frank, it's generally better than some places. You should see the Guardian's Comment is Free, described by one ex-contributor as a "political and moral cess-pool"; gawd only knows what tabloid message-boards must be like.

OK, Zagreb. I'll concede there are no more empty vessels now than there were then. I do think there used to be more wisdom and insight and tolerance though.

I dunno about wisdom and what have you, but there were more voices, and therefore more interesting people, which made having the same old arguments more entertaining.
Let's hope we expand again in our new incarnation.
