Praise of the Eclectic:
Single-mindedness may be the root of all known evils. Why not be a realist and romantic? Leonardo de V. was an artist, engineer and inventor; Winston S. was a soldier, author, statesman, drinker; T. Jefferson and B. Franklin were both practical while intellectual men. Must we not pursue pan-disciplinary knowledge to rise to the top?
Is being all things for all occasions a worthy quest? Swoon at the ballet, then dance some Salsa until the small hours – wash down your pizza with ‘La Grande Dame’, but don’t mistake inelegance for individualism. Maybe the princess kissed the frog because he was one hell of a kisser. Variety is, after all, the spice of life.
Universities are meant to be universal – great discoveries were made before the age of specialisation by people who could look and actually see something.
The primary function of life is that it’s to be enjoyed after birth, not after death.
