Hmmm, maybe I need my eyes testing...

I'll fix it in tomorrow's update. If anyone want to help data collection by emailing me timestamped copies of the 'Who's Online' window between midnight and 6am GMT I'd be grateful as site policy dictates that my internet connection is offline then (smiley - sadface). My email address is on my userpage.

Ah, yes it begins to make sense now, as much as rows of numbers ever make sense. Thank you.

I've just posted an updated graph and updated results. Having upgraded by database system to Postgresql 7.1 from 6.5, I rewrote the queries to use the built in standard deviation function and so I've reworked the output slightly, hope its readable.

Forgot to document what the new stuff means:
The top table is now sorted by stdev to try and help show how the nhm group has the lowest.

The bottom table not only displays the p and r values instead of the more complicated friends and active columns. r and p are simply the averages columns from the first two tables. The total active researchers is calculated as r / p. The average number of hours is from (active * 24 * 7) / total) where active is the total number of active researchers.

Here's a new statistic. Since I've now collected data for a few days, I did a query on the total number of distinct userids seen (that were not new this week), and found that 1074 distinct users. Plus looking at the latest graph, there has been quite a sharp drop off in users in the past few days. (Data will be posted later)

I've just updated the stats, including the graph, which shows the big Christmas drop off in users.

I think I've got enough data now, so I'm going to get the stats together this weekend. I hope there's still some people interested?

I am, as long as you provide a translation into plain English. smiley - winkeye

I don't think statistics can be described in plain English. They are mutually exclusive. smiley - tongueout
And I'm still interested.

Great Idea! A Post article. Perhaps I could also write an edited guide article about the stats. behind this?

I never did get round to writing that article did I?

Unfortunately I don't really have copies of the original data anymore (or the database views I used), so in reviving this I'm going to write some new software which is more efficient in space and time, and is built around my new 'Hoobot' architecture.

Stay tuned, and I might just write an article.
