Chicken pox?

I have started doing my research today and it's exactly as I said in post 37:

Shingles is a reappearance of chickenpox.

You cannot get shingles if you've not had CP. (Some people with shingles claim that they never had CP. This simply means that their bout of CP was so mild that it was not diagnosed at the time - or they have fortgotten coz it was so long ago)

Anyone who's had CP can develop shingles.

Shingles is not infectious. You cannot get shingles from another sufferer. Neither can you get it from s'one with CP, even though its the same virus. However, s'one with shingles may give another person CP if that person has not had CP before.

Know one really knows what causes the virus to reactivate, although stress is a factor.

Hi, BIGAL

Your paragraph(below) is clearly what happened to us, and stress most definitely was a factor smiley - steam

"Shingles is not infectious. You cannot get shingles from another sufferer. Neither can you get it from s'one with CP, even though its the same virus. However, s'one with shingles may give another person CP if that person has not had CP before."

Dad was 77 at the time, so a lapse of memory is very possible.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Good luck with your research, it benefits us all.

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

I have very small dark spots that look like slightly raised moles on my arms at the moment and I've been wondering if I've had a slight reinfection of chicken pox. I've had them for at least a week. I definitely had it as a child.

Little smiley - fish hasn't finished being ill. He has had a dreadful cough all weekend. Last night was the first night he's slept through in three nights. I took him in to the start of the Summer Playschool (and my first day back at work in almost a month) and he threw up during breakfast. I've had to collect him and bring him home, so I'll be working from home for the day. He's sitting in front of the TV wrapped in a blanket, still coughing at the moment.

Hmm. I believe you can be re-infected with CP, I recall reading this y'day but can't find the reference at the minute. However, it's not the norm.

I've just started to put tiogether my article. It's on CP and shingles, as they're both caused by the same virus. It's at A2866430 if you'd like to visit.

i'll probably add a bit to it each day. It's already given me ideas for some other Guide entries which haven't been tackled yet viz genital herpes and glandular fever.

smiley - ermThe chance would be a fine thing - to contribute more than one article per day!
My one on Moh's Scale, which I naively thought was going to be a 'piece of p***' eventiually took me 3 weeks (I think), while the one on 'Lenses' which was supposed to be a 'quickie' to support another article, eventually took me 4 weeks.
This chickenpox/shingles one, which should be quite quick, as I have most of the info to hand, should also be quite quick, but who knows? ..... given my record to date? !!!

Putting an entry into Peer Review is always interesting, BIGAL. Sometimes you think you've got a really well developed entry, and another researcher can mine gold for you and turn a good entry into a really great one. That happened with my Baba Yaga entry A823402, when a Russian speaking researcher delved into the Russian language websites - I couldn't possibly have been able to access them.

On the other hand, I've had entries go through in little over a week with just minor adjustments.

Some entries are long in gestation, and some come together over a weekend. Well, they used to - I don't have as much time free as I used to. smiley - smiley

Actuially, this CP/shingles one is coming along fine; I might even get the bulk of it done this evening - off and on.

Then I'll need to check it through to see if there are anymore links I can put in. It might be essentially ready to submit to PR tomorrow.
I am trying to write as many of my Guide ideas as possible whilst the schoolsa are on holiday, as I have little timwe during term time.

Are you a teacher then, BIGAL? If you're a student, then you're a very organised and mature one.

Hi Zarquon, Yes, I'm a teacher. That's what really attracted me to h2g2 - because I enjoy researching, re-processing and communicating information in a form that's interesting and useful to other people.

I teach Advanced Level Chemistry i.e. to 16-18 yr olds. Before that I was researching new generation virus vaccines - hence part of my interest in writing this article.

BTW Thw article is now more or less complete. I just need to get up to the minute information on vaccines, and then check the whole thing through.

That's the beauty of h2g2, BIGAL - it appeals to all sorts and Peer Review is great for people who love to research and share information. There's a lot of experience out there too. If I get time, I'll stop by your entry this evening after work and see how it's shaping up.

I used to like chemistry at school, but I had to give it up if I wanted to carry on with German and i wanted to do German more.
