Traveller in Time should reread some history
"Was it not also used to bleech the clothes in the sun? (before flushing with fresh water)"
Chicken pox?
Zarquon's Singing Fish! Posted Jul 21, 2004
It didn't really affect my whites, but then, putting them in the washing machine isn't the same as bleaching in the sun it is? Websailor may know.

Traveller in Time chance does not exist
"Check out 'Trillians child' < U154942 > , nice local link to doing the laundry, including sun bleaching < A543494 > (Hey it is quite close to bleech ). "

Oh, yes. I didn't realise that she had written that entry and I haven't looked at it for a while. Thanks, TiT

Hi, and
, thanks for the tip about washing soda will take a look next time I escape further than the local shops
Don't do floors, have heavy duty carpet tiles so can't help there. I do use Oxygen bleach though, does the jobs just as well, and doesn't smell horrible.
thanks for the Trillion's Child links - I will take a look later. I think you might be right about washing clothes in bicarb and drying in the sun. Washing put out in freezing conditions goes stiff, but bleaches lvoely and white with no extra work.
Going to find some food I am allowed to eat now, I hope . Don't have anything "naughty but nice" in the house like

Strawberries aren't naughty! They're full of good valuable stuff:
http://sr.cyberdreaming.com.au/strawberries/nutrition.php
It's only when you put sugar on them that they're naughty.
What sort of things aren't you allowed to eat, Websailor? For me it's bread, wheat and yeast based things, milk and cheese.

My wife's just caught shingles - same virus. Very pauinful!
Chicken pox?
Zarquon's Singing Fish! Posted Jul 24, 2004
Ouch! Apparently in the outbreak at little 's school, one of the children got shingles, which is unusual in children.
I know someone who got shingles on the fact - he still has scars on his forehead, and I'm told if it had become more serious, he could have lost his sight - frightening!
I hope your wife recovers quickly, BIGAL.

. She's being treated with an antiviral agent at present and the weal across her abdomen appears to be waning. However, I read in my medical dictionary that any scars that are formed are almost invariably permanent.
I'm thinking of adding a bit more to the existing 'Guide' entry on shingles.

Oh, that's interesting. I wonder why? Roy's scars are white and look like those on people who have lost pigmentation due to sun damage. I hope your wife doesn't get any of these.
I've not read the Guide entry on shingles.
Oh, it is a bit sparse. No doubt it could do with updating. There is an update procedure - I can't remember exactly how to do it, but I could find out, if you need it.

BigAl Patron Saint of Left Handers Keeper of the Glowing Pickle and Monobrows Posted Jul 24, 2004
but I have found out how to do the updating procedure. I am currently doing it for an article on Comets (and association with catastrophes) and another on Mnemonics.
Many of my articles seem to start from small beginnings (which is why they actually get started!) and grow and GROW and......

Mmm, just popped by your page and you seem to have done a lot in the short time you've been with h2g2 (unless you were here under a different name of course).
Eclectic tastes - looks like you'll be a great asset to the site! ;-D

No, I haven't been here under a different name. All of my Guide entries have been written in the last 3 weeks - I made the mistake of starting several at once. This was because I initially rthought that the one's I had in mind would be dead easy. BIG MISTAKE!!

Hi, BIGAL
to hear your wife has shingles. It's no fun. My Dad had it right round his middle, my friend had it on her leg, and my aunt got it on her face
It left her scarred for life, and in some pain, but she was lucky it missed her eyes! She wore theatre makeup for years to disguise the scars.
I hope your wife will be feeling better soon. Watch out, as you can get chicken pox from it. Our doctor laughed and said you couldn't but we all got it.

Thanks for the links. I used to eat vast quantities, but since reading about the chemicals used during growth and the spraying to make them look shiny and keep longer, I went off them a bit
I used to grow my own, but the wildlife used to get to them before I did It is the that is my downfall, I don't use sugar, but I have trained myself to use yoghurt now, so I shall go out and buy some next week without feeling guilty - ever so, that's made my day

Hi Websailor,
Oddly enough my sketchy memory tells me that one catches shingles if one has previously had chicken pox - not vice versa. This is 'coz the virus lies dormant foer many years in the nerve endings ubntil it's reactivated somehow.
As I say, I intend to do some more Research and add to the existing Guyide entry

Websailor Posted Jul 25, 2004
BIGAL,
I do hope you can clear it up for me. That was what we were told, but as we had no contact with my Dad (he had been in hospital for three weeks) and no-one at my sons' school had c/pox, then or later, it appeared to have come from him via the hospital
He was very ill and run down, and that is usually when shingles strikes, so perhaps he was wrong when he said he had never had chickenpox. We certaInly hadn't, so I am very puzzled
