I am absolutely flabbergasted - what are the governors thinking???
Send the letter to the local authority.
Not, of course, that local authorities will be around much longer, when every school has become an academy and can do what it wants ... and so comes the end of free schooling, by the looks of it.

Well it is a "voluntary" contribution, and I don't actually mind giving them some money, but this level of demand before we've even started there? It just worries me further, and makes me question how they are getting their ofsted reports if the place is falling apart so badly that they have to hound us before we start.

It may well be a voluntary donation, but it's still an outrageous thing to ask.
Just because the school is poor at managing money that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad at educating children. I wouldn't set a great deal of store by Ofsted reports anyway. Far more important is the feel of the classroom that t'Boy will be in
