Hey how's things goin' way out west there?

You mentioned in another thread that you and your brother were driving and arguing about music.

This got me thinking about an old friend of mine from 20 years ago that said something that I've thought of often since. I was considered quite a music snob in my youth - I felt that everyone should listen to good music not mindless-pop or redneck-country, or etc. I spent much time railing against radio and music industry that overlooked so much great stuff and kept feeding the tasteless masses the same dreck over and over while ignoring so many geniuses.
Then in the middle of one of my rants along these lines my afore-mentioned friend said "Doug do you really want these rednecks at your concert with you? Country music was made to keep people like that away from the rest of humanity. It serves a valuable purpose."
While it was a humorous statement I realized that the music I loved couldn't be appreciated by all people and vice-a-versa. There is a music for everyone. Simpler music for simpler folk and if it makes them happy then it is great music! I don't HAVE to listen to it and that makes me happy. I don't need the radio to play my music it will only co-opt it and therefore ruin it. It just has to mean something to me and those I care about! I can't change the world to be carbon-copies of me, it's diversity is what makes it interesting.
And every once in awhile the pop world puts out an Elton John or the country world puts out a Steve Earl and makes it all worthwhile.

Things are going well enough out here. Almost finished with school for the semester... I can't wait...

We had a moment of silence for George in one of my classes... smiley - hug

It is odd that we were just talking about George in post 163 and 164 the day before he passed.

In fact I went home and listened to "All things must pass" straight through. Remembering that I had that on 8-track way back when I commuted an hour to college..."All those years ago".

Well back to the earlier conversation.

Do you think of yourself as a music-snob?
(you know - when you describe what you listen to as the right music
and what others listen to as the wrong music)

If so do you think the re-thinking of my position on the subject
as a worthwhile antidote to that frame of mind?

smiley - huh

I'm a musical snob because I have, I think, a diverse taste in music... I've listened to a lot of stuff and I know what I like, what moves me, and what captivates me...!!! Musical snob!??? NO.... just me.

It's never about the quality of music I listen to, it's more about my attitude towards others who listen to a lesser quality of music in my opinion and how I interact with those people, that made me a music-snob.

Example: My wife has gone from listening to Air Supply then Prince then Whitesnake then Pearl Jam then Celine Dion then N'syc. Which drives me nuts, to listen to something just because music executives deem its the next fashionable thing, but her defence is that she likes the music and it makes her happy, so don't get caught up in the politics of why it's popular...just enjoy and move on.

Two different points of view...why argue...different strokes for different folks.

*feels like singing "Working on a Chain Gang"*

I guess my weekend isn't filled with a "Jingle Bells as interpreted by Kenny G" tape loop playing over and over loud speakers!

Hey a trip to England huh?

That's great!!

What ever happened to the parents who wouldn't even let you go on a camping weekend with Ian?

They met him and found out he wasn't a homicidal manic with two heads?

So will you be doing much traveling/sightseeing? Tell all!!!

smiley - winkeye My parents like Ian, but they don't like the age and geographical distance... but I think they're learning that doesn't change how we feel... do be do!!! YAY!!!

It was a big huge tearful battle... but matters are now peaceful. It's very nice. My mother's only request is that "if you think you're going to England, you have to do some cleaning", which is perfectly reasonable. I live here for nothing, I have to help out!!!

It's obvious I won't be stopped from going, either. Mom asked me to tell some of her students today where I was going. That's TRUE approval right there!!! YAY!!!

Ian will be teaching while I visit, so on school nights I will be staying with him in Sussex. That's Southeastern England. He estimates that a five hour trainride will take me to Liverpool, which is a definate destination point!!! It'd be more logical to spend a night there, but being so close to Ian, I refuse to even experiment with the idea!!! smiley - yikessmiley - loveblush

I want to visit the h2g2 Towers and meet some fellow researchers one evening... By the 28th I should have my Lonely Planet guide to England, and I will make more plans.

Our first weekend, we'll go stay near his mother. YAY!!! And on our second weekend, we'll stay in Stratford!!! YAY!!!

I want to see Abbey Road, too... smiley - hug Westminster Abbey would be great as well!!!

DO BE DO!!! smiley - magic

*clears throat*

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing alleluia;
Christ the Savior, is born!
Christ the Savior, is born!

Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

*settles down in rocking chair by the fireplace*

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
All the stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In the hope that Saint Nicholas soon would be there.
Then, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
A miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer,
A little old driver so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be Saint Nick.
And more rapid than eagles his reindeer all came
As he shouted, "Oh Dasher" and each reindeer's name.
And so up to the housetop the reindeer soon flew
With the sleigh full of toys and Saint Nicholas, too.
Down the chimney he came with a leap and a bound;
He was dressed all in fur, and his belly was round.
He spoke not a word but went straight to this work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
Then giving a nod up the chimney he rose.
But I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight,
"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"
