My father bought a huge black Ford station wagon in 1968 for our family trip across the U.S. to visit our relatives in California. The car was brand new when we left Massachusetts. It broke down in Elko, Nevada, and we had to use other forms of transportation for a week.

Ford have had low moments (didn't they produce the Edsel? Which I only know from Mad Magazine and later film references), but they are number one in Ireland still. Indeed they are internationally huge, and now proud owners of many successful marques including Volvo.
I drive a Toyota Yaris Verso which gives me 51 miles to the gallon (Imperial gallon, almost a fifth bigger than the US gallon)
