Stumbled over you in one of those threads dealing with the the mysterious creatures named Americans, and didn't want to mislay you again.
Got a garden too so suppose that's why i found your mindset congenial, although mine's in Germany, East Germany to be precise, garden and mindset.
Btw. I used to have some beef with St. Paul over the years but latelely i came across a learned and quite lucid argument that he's been falsified exactly in the verses i had most of my objections to, and i really could have thunk of that possibility meself.

Hi, Delicia.
Saintliness at H2G2 is a lot different
from saintliness in the Roman Catholic Church.
I'm definitely of the H2G2 variety. A lot
of the early writings of the Christian Church
were banned in the third century. Possibly
even some of Christ's disciples were judged
heretical, so their works were presumably
destroyed, except for about 50 manuscripts
that some rebellious monks secretly saved
for posterity. These were rediscovered in
1945 in Egypt.
I like the idea that some of Christ's teachings
were judged too hot to handle. He was definitely
a rebel. I'm reading "Beyond Belief," by Pagels,
which just came out this year. It discusses
the Gospel of Thomas, which came under fire from
fans of the Gospel of John. John made it into
the Bible. Thomas did not.

Ah yes, i think those writings that were not included in the bible should shed a distinct light on it much more than anything. Are you making a study of that by any chance? *Looking extreemely greedy*
I think our idea of Christ is just that, an idea, or rather ideas, some very beautiful thought systems, i'm not saying those ought to be discarded, but i've wondered more than once, what was he really like? What could he have been like, considering his times? (I tend to think he is historical, although i suppose that doesn't really matter.)
If it comes to that, what can anyone be like, considering the times a person lives in? What would i be like and capable of, had i been born under different circumstances? That's a question i can only face in the rare instants when feeling strong enough.

I wonder about those things, too, Delicia.
Your temperament is probably pretty stable.
A timid person would likely be timid no matter
what time he/she lived in. Likewise a rebellious
person.
On the other hand, I can see how someone who was
severely mistreated as a child might be warped by
the experience...

uh, oh that famous unhappy childhood rearing it's ugly head! The excuse that beat the "my dog ate it" ruse, and i'd say, even the "it's in the mail" trick
I beg pardon, don't know what came over me. Overuse of that excuse does make it tough on those who really had a rough deal though, and that does make me .
I see however that you would be more inclined to give benefit of doubt than i would, and I think in fact that's why i waylayed you, in case you wondered. Occasionally I am in need for some check on my stably fiery temperament (sic).
In the case of the difficult childhood or other difficult situation being fact, there would be two ways to deal with abuse, one is to avoid at all cost to do the same to others. The other, to repeat the pattern, this time with oneself being "top". Now, how much choice does a human being really have i wonder?
