Up wi` the souters
Souter - defined
The word "Souter" in old Scots means Shoemaker, and is the name taken by the people of Selkirk in the scottish borders, due to the large number of souters plying their trade in this Royal & Ancient Burgh.
In 1645, the town supplied 2,000 pairs of shoes - or shin - to the Young Pretender, Bonnie Prince Charlie. The Jacobite cause soon fell out of favour in the area, as the shoes remain unpaid for.
Another more obscure name given to the natives is "The Japs", with no satisfactory explanation why. If any other contributors can hazard a guess, or even reads this page, I`ll tell you why our near neighbours in Galashiels are referred to as Pailmerks
