Here a year on the 3rd of May!
Posted Apr 27, 2002
It's hard to believe that my h2g2 birthday is coming up! I haven't produced as many Edited Entries as I'd originally hoped - on the other hand, I think I've contributed quite a lot to Peer Review, so I'm happy with how that's worked out. And I may manage to finish some of those half-done entries.......

My Best Operatic Year Ever!
Posted Nov 27, 2001
When I went back to work in January, after the best part of eight months' sick leave, I was determined that this year, I would really make an effort to see what I could. So, in terms of opera, it worked!
Spring:
1 The Lighthouse, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Opera Theatre Company, O'Reilly Theatre, Dublin -great, very intense.
2 Der Fliegende Hollander, Wagner, Opera Ireland, Gaiety Theatre, Dublin - great.
3 The Silver Tassie, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Opera Ireland, Gaiety Theatre, Dublin - great production, not very memorable music.
Summer
4 Faust, Gounod, Anna Livia Festival, Gaiety Theatre, Dublin - very old-fashioned production but good.
5 Il Tabarro, Puccini, Anna Livia Festival, Gaiety Theatre, Dublin - good.
6 Gianni Schicchi, Puccini, Anna Livia Festival, Gaiety Theatre, Dublin - good.
7 Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Shostakovitch, ENO, Coliseum, London - wonderful.
8 Don Giovanni, Mozart, ENO, Coliseum, London - dreadful production.
9 The Rape of Lucretia, Britten, ENO, Coliseum, London, great.
Autumn
10 Erismena, Cavalli, Opera Theatre Company, St. Werburgh's Dublin - wonderful.
11 Jacobin, Dvorak, Wexfrod Festival Opera - wonderful.
12 Sappho, Massenet, Wexford Festial Opera - great.
13 Alessandro Stradella, Flotow, Wexford Festival Opera - great.
14 Cosi fan Tutte, Mozart, Scottish Opera, Edinburgh Festival Theatre - great.
15 Don Carlo, Verdi, Opera Ireland, Gaiety Theatre, Dublin - wonderful.
16 Julio Cesare, Handel, Opera Ireland, Gaiety Theatre, Dublin - wonderful.

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency
This is the best book I've read in ages. It's by Alexander McCall Smith, who appears to be a Scottish author who's been writing for years, though he wasn't well known till now. The title sounds sarcastic but it's not - in the book, Mma Ramotswe of Botswana decides to use her father's legacy to set up a detective agency. The style is deceptively simple, and while the characters' ideas may sometimes seem simple by western standards, they are presented in a very sympathetic way, without the slightest touch of condescension. There is a wonderful feel for Africa in the book.
I strongly recommend it!
