Vienna and Budapest
Posted Jun 9, 2003
I'm off early tomorrow (Tuesday) morning for a few days in Vienna, then on to Budapest. Last year in Pisa I found myself sneaking into an internet cafe to check what was going on here... if I turn up online again before Thursday week, then I'll have to admit to being an addict!
I'll be back in plenty of time for the London meet, so I hope to meet plenty of people there.

Catching up with my life...
Posted Nov 24, 2002
The end is now in sight as far as all the extra overtime is concerned, so I may finally catch up with all the things I should be doing outside work. Those Guide entries that have been quietly incubating in my head may soon reach the page!
And I've managed to get to three operas in the last few weeks: OTC's Little Magic Flute, and Opera Ireland's productions of Andrea Chenier and The Queen of Spades. Tchaikovsky is so much better as a composer than poor old Giordano that there was simply no comparison!

Pisa and Siena
Posted Jun 29, 2002
Things have certainly changed since the last time I went travelling by myself....having an Internet cafe round every corner makes the temptation to log on irresistible! So here I am in Pisa, still trying to adjust to the heat, and dredge up all my half-forgotten Italian. It's a strange city: there is one incredibly popular tourist sight, around the Leaning Tower, but the rest of the city seems hardly to expect any tourists at all, and the University students seem to be the overpowering influence. The whole area around the tower is just amazing: the Baptistery, the Cathedral, and the Monumental Cemetery are actually more interesting than the tower. The tower is open to the public again, but I have to clock it up as one more famous sight that I've refused to climb - they warned people susceptible to dizzy spells not to go up, and just the look of the people at the top was enough to make me queasy.
On to Siena tomorrow....at this rate I'll be sending back regular bulletins.
