I want to be Forever Young
Posted May 28, 2004
OH MY GOD!!
One of the greatest revelations of my mature life came to me a couple of minutes ago! Listen up; Cute, sexy Malcolm McDowell from 'A clockwork orange' is the same person as that creepy, snippy Malcolm McDowell in the 'Fantasy Island' TV series.
Sweet Mercy! No!!
You might think me strange (I knew all along that the old man was named Malcolm McDowell, but I never drew that direct line until a few minutes ago), but in my little world, people I admire aren't meant to grow old, you see.
Not McDowell - who was meant to forever be around 30 years old, with nicely chiseled features and fascinating eyes.
Not Kiefer Sutherland - who should always look like he did in 'Stand by me', or failing that, in 'The lost boys' minus the mullet.
And definately not Paul McCartney - who should have been refused to grow beyond the age of 24! (I'm in fact going to his concert in two weeks)
And what a strange coincidence this revelation about age should come to me the same day I started reading 'The picture of Dorian Grey'...

Confessions of a maturing mind

Yes yes, I'm not the last to admit I've made some mistakes in my period of being ("Am too!" - "Am not!"), so here's a nice little 'top-of-my-head' list of one of things I care most passionately about: Music.
Without further ado, a final proof that I *am* able to overcome denial: CD's I regret ever buying (chronologically):
1. Middle of Nowhere, HANSON - My biggest blunder. Ever. I don't know, I was ten years old and had my own money to spend and 'Mmmbop' was a big hit at the time. It just happened, okay? To this day, I have never listened to more than two songs on it.
2. Always, MICHAEL BALL - Yes, I'm "man" enough to admit it now; I never liked this album. I just kept listening to it because I felt I ought to, though it's just a compliation of lesser versions of old jazz and Elvis songs.
3. Experiment, MANDY PATINKIN - Okay, so I liked him in Chicago Hope, and I absolutely adore his name... But that doesn't mean I have to like his nasal, squeaky voice singing slowed-down showtunes. My mother keeps telling me he got the best version of 'Poisoning pigeons in the park' ever, pity it isn't on this album.
4. Full Anthems & Organ Music, HENRY PURCELL - I'm able to like classical music, I really am. Bach and Beethoven, now we're talkin'. At least I found out I'm not into religious organ music. Whew.
5. Pointless Nostalgic, JAMIE CULLUM - After a long time of drawn-out denial, I confess there's nothing that bores me more than Cullum jazz. I only bought this album because I was one of the few Norwegians at that time that had heard about this guy (now everybody loves him and I'm nothing special), plus I still think his version of 'I could have danced all night' is the best version ever. Pity it isn't on this album.
That's all I can think of now. Just remember: Don't make the same mistakes as I did, kids.

Despair
Posted May 7, 2004
How the hell do I tell an 'aquantance' I'm madly in love with him?
I'm not used to having such pathetic crushes - alright, not completely true, but I'm not used to having crushes on people I see everyday. I wish I knew him better, but I'm hopeless at talking - I need five minutes to pull myself together before I even ask if I can borrow one of his CDs.
I've decided it's not going to be like all the other times, where I pine away secretly, until the guy is no longer available.
"I really wish I was less of a thinking man
And more a fool who's not afraid of rejection
I'll just be standing here 'cause I know I don't have the guts to come on"
('Sleeping with the television on', Billy Joel)
I've given myself a deadline for making it clear to him. That leaves three possible results: 1) I tell him. 2) I chicken out and continue despairing. 3) I find somebody else and start pining for him instead.
I'm really going for no. 1, but I'm a coward *Heartfelt sigh*

Rants about music
Posted Apr 23, 2004
What's the reason for putting that anti-copy code on CDs when I don't INTEND to copy it, I just want to play it on my computer when I work. Well, then they FORCE me to copy it (to MiniDisc) since I can't listen to it in its CD form. Damn you, evil music corporations!
Anyway, lately I've really come into Billy Joel music, by the way. Cute songs (that are absolutely impossible to sing along with), extremely charming voice. Too bad he looks like a fish. But at least I can show people that not all the singers I'm into are good-looking (to my peculiar taste), but so far I think Joel is the only exception (imagening Paul McCartney as a twenty year-old, of course).
I read that the Beatles' 'Obladi-oblada' is voted into the top-ten list of the worst songs ever. As it happens, I ADORE the White Album version - it's really cruel to make that list and put one of my favourite songs in it. And 'Underneath your clothes' was nowhere on that list, which only goes to show I'm the only person in the world with some taste.
At this particular moment I'm listening to AC/DC's 'You shook me all night long' which is really, really good, you know. Too bad it's considered nigh ancient and 'harry' (meaning pathetic, passé) by my generation. It's cool, damnit! And I might have a thing for men in uniform (Hah! Get it?)
That's all the random music thoughts for this time. Better return back to the school work...

The scent of autumn leaves
Posted Mar 25, 2004
How utterly strange that one of my most pleasant dreams of late involved smelling the hair of a non-existant character from a book.
But it did.
And it wasn't a completely pleasant dream, mind you. Some parts were really terrifying, with boats and arrows and animal noises and what-have-you-not. But the part that involved catching a whiff of his hair was absolutely lovely - terrific. I'm very certain I smiled in my sleep.
Maybe I should cut down on the late movies ("I had the luvliest dream last night!")
