Queeglesproggit - Keeper of the evil Thingite Avon Lady Army and Mary Poppins's bag of darkness..

Hello!

Sorry ducks, it's quite rare that I get messages so I often forget to check! smiley - blush

I'm groovy cuz it's FRIDAY BABY YEAH!!! smiley - boingsmiley - boingsmiley - boing

I've always had a passing interest in philosophy, especially since I started looking at self-discovery. Somebody bought me Sophie's World for a smiley - xmastree chrimbly present, a while later I started reading it, and got hooked! I love that it's a story, it makes you think about philosophy, but tells you so much history as wellsmiley - biggrin

I'm gonna be super busy today and for the next couple of weeks, I'm covering somebody who's on holiday as well as my own work... I may even have enough to fill my day! smiley - yikes So don't get offended if I don't get to reply quickly, I'll remember to check my messages though smiley - winkeye

Are you going to the Summer meet?

Hello

DoctorMO (Keeper of the Computer, Guru, Community Artist)

Sure am going to the summer meet smiley - smiley can't wait, got the train tickets, and planed were I'm staying...

Yes it's a friday I can't wait to kick of the shoes tonight and let my.. er.. feet up...

I've always had an interest in philosophy as well as lots of other things, such as computers. but I want to specialise in social philosophy, which kind of overlaps the phicyastrist and the physics.

I lean more towards the physics side... I like to know how things work smiley - biggrin

I used to be interested in psychiatry and psychology, but as I've learned more about myself that interest has waned. Which leads me to the theory that all psychiatrists are folk who are lost in their own head!smiley - biggrin

Sociology though, would be more interesting - how people work as a group consciousness. What have you studied/dipped into so far?

You've got me thinking now, I'm not meant to be thinking, I'm meant to be working smiley - crosssmiley - winkeyesmiley - biggrin

Gonna get me head down forra bit smiley - geek

I'll keep this foray light then smiley - smiley don't want you overheating (no no I'm sorry, Arhgh, smiley - laugh)

One of my main toughts is about god, odd about that you may think, but I blive people created a god because they need to know the world isn't crule and harsh for no reason, as you can see as life becomes easyer, god dribbles away under reason. but it's more interesting to look at people who belive in god still, how they interprate there good book and how it effects them and theyr herd. interestingly enough this is a huge subject, so I can't really go over much here.

I'm also looking into a poion herd effect in socities as big as ours, does this account for trends, do we feel we'er going to get eaten less we conform? how a large population effects the the type of socialising that goes on in a localised enviroment and how politics effects people and visa versa.

smiley - hugs sorry I was going to keep it light, darn.

Hey ho, it's not mandatory.

How many other meets have you been to? It's my first one, even though I've been on H2G2 for nearly 3 years now smiley - biggrin

The heavy stuff.... smiley - winkeye
People created Gods to make sense of the things they didn't understand. As science solves more and more questions, churches would become less popular. But on the other hand, as technology breaks down the barriers to communication, travel becomes easier and different cultures mix on a scale never seen before, society becomes less localised, people feel less and less like they 'belong' to a community and in that way, churches become more popular. So thinking about it, all in all, the whole religion thing is just fulfilling a space where society thinks it's empty, before due to knowledge, now due to a need for community.

I think it's safe to say that society does think it's going to get eaten unless it conforms, especially now as politics run amuk. But could you explain more on that point? Especially "how a large population effects the the type of socialising that goes on in a localised enviroment" can you expand on that?

I think your right about the church and the development of in the last 100 years...

"how a large population effects the the type of socialising that goes on in a localised enviroment"

Right I'll start by pointing out the causes: Communication, Internet comunities, Transportation, cynercism. As say someone works in a town and lives in another part of town, they don't really need to meet anyone around were they live, add onto that all the comunications they can do with friends from else were in the world, and the fact that they can go online and stay in a comunity of like minds, such as H2G2. this effects a local comunity because the members are not willing to improve or aid the comunity they are detached from it. I think alot of people realise this is going on. not to mention the fact that some people are atualy scared about were they live or can be drawn into a global scale and away from the local scale. put it another way, local comunities are dieing and as such the in kind nature of comunities fades with them.

smiley - headhurts This may not be the best day, my sleeping isn't great and i feel like I'm making no sense.

I have got a PC and net access at home, but the PC is broke at the mo' smiley - wah and I haven't got round to trying to fix it yet smiley - erm

I went to a seminar last year on localisation and globalisation, which made similar points. Although also looking at the reverse effect, for instance, in Alaska, the 'world' is very concerned with deforestation, but tree-cutting is the backbone of the local economy. As the world is becoming smaller, and people are looking at things on a grander scale, they're ignoring their local communities, but attacking other communities' way of life, because it does damage to the 'big picture'.

All in all, I don't think I'm making a lot of sense, but it is Monday morning and I'm only just eating me brekkie! smiley - biggrin
