h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

It's taken me ages to get signed in... and then my page turned into one with that nightmarish new skin where you can't find anything and nothing works. Have they been fiddling with all the knobs?

We had to change to the new site because the old site was causing the server to be unstable and therefore lots of problems.

I have to admit I have no problem at all using the new site: but then I was helping with the testing. So you can write up your contributions in the new site pliny. I know you don't like the appearance, but it does work. A lot of the bugs are gone from the new skin now. but of course many people prefer to switch back to the old one.

Your other option is to switch back into the old site. The 'skin changer' isn't sticky so you'll have to do it like this. I'm doing it myself in another window as I post. This works well if you usually use h2g2 from the same computer and no one else uses this computer. This is what I've been doing whilst switching from Pliny to my favourite skin goo. I hope it works for you.

1. Open your browser, and go to h2g2.com then click 'Sign in to create or view your personal space'.

2. Enter your user name and password, then click the box beside 'remember me on this computer'

3. click on enter.

4. You'll now get back to the front page of the new site. Click on preferences, on this menu change 'Skin' to the skin of your choice. (Goo in my case).

5. Now click on update. This gets me to my personal space in Goo.

6 Now I go to my browser and use the book mark feature to book mark my personal space in goo. In Chrome I click on 'Bookmarks' and then 'Bookmark this page'.

7.Enjoy h2g2 in goo alabaster etc.

8. When I have finished using h2g2 I don't logout I just close down my browser window.

9. The next time I want to use h2g2 I open my browser and open the bookmark menu where I have saved the book mark to my personal space. This takes me to my personal space in goo, I then don't have to login again.

I hope this makes sense. Please let me know if anything needs clarifying.

I was going to ask what Pliny meant, but I tried preferences and I see it's that skin I so dislike. I'm already set to Alabaster so didn't need to change that. Not sure what would happen if I changed User Mode from Basic to Advanced. I guess things would get more complicated?

The page is Alabaster now and I'll see if I can keep it like that. That other skin... well, it and I are enemies and I'll have none of it if I can help it

I was worried.

I had my tumor removed Monday, 3 inch incision running under the ear lobe and behind the ear, surgical drain still in place, to be removed M 11 Jun 2012 along with stitches.

No neurological impairment.

Last time I had surgical work done there, there were problems and it took some doing relearning how to smile, wink, puff out my cheek and raise the eyebrow on the right side of my face.

On what's happened to h2g2, though its based on Barlesque, it's been upgraded and is more stable and is now 'Pliny'.

Unfortunately, the Ripley system is destabilizing and can't be fixed.

I personally was happier with Brunel, easier on my eyes.

My dear ITIWBS, I'm so pleased to hear your op went well. And now that's out of the way for you. It must be a relief. I've had about a dozen ear ops (possibly more... you lose count) for a "benign" (quotes cuz it didn't feel very benign) tumour that just kept coming back. The last time they couldn't take it all out because of its proximity to the trigeminal nerve and the risk of losing face control. So I can well sympathise with what you went through.

Sorry I haven't been in for a while. I may have mentioned this (memory badly on the blink now) so sorry to repeat if so. I'm staying at my brother's place: a middle of nowhere with a coming and going sort of signal. We can get on the internet but it's sooooo slowwww and frustrating and likely to "time-out" you before you manage to do anything. Complained to BT about it but they say it's "within acceptable limits" - even though it's too slow to do anything at all sometimes. I do manage to twitter, but only because there's an ap for twittering on my phone. Oh well.

It's not the worst thing. Mustn't grumble I suppose

I do hope it continues to go well with you. I'm not doing too badly with the jolly old cancer. Can't say I feel much worse than I did before it was diagnosed. I was, however, almost immobilised by pain for another reason... or possibly an added reason yesterday evening and last night. Just about able to move again now, taking it easy...

Some evil parasite has dumped 25 Welsh ponies on my brother's 10 acre field and isn't feeding them, or looking after them in any way whatsoever. Bill is trying to get her to remove them and also trying to get the RSPCA to take responsibility for them. The RSPCA have advised him not to feed them, because they won't be able to do anything until the poor animals fall over and can't get up... at which point she will have broken the law and the ponies can be shot eventually, apparently. Well, Bill can't stand by and let those unfortunate creatures starve, so he's buying hay and haylage to feed them. He's gone away for a few days so the job of feeding them falls to me. It must've taken me almost 4 hours all told yesterday, humping bales of hay in and out of the wheelbarrow and yanking out haylage to stuff sacks, then transporting that to and across the field, trying to dodge the flying hooves as the stallions all fight over it. And my hands are torn and blistered from the haylage yanking. Quite exhausting doing it without Bill's help. Seems a lot more than twice as hard with half the person power. Anyway, this evil woman deposited her horses in the field somewhere around the beginning of May. They stripped the grass pretty quickly and then started battering down the fences to get out when they got hungry. They were trampling crops, galloping up the roads and through the woods. Brave people who knew nothing about horses risked injury bringing them back. Nightmare! So now every day seems almost entirely devoted to looking after them, liaising with RSPCA, DEFRA, Trading Standards, police - with each organisation passing the buck to the others. Incredible!

It's almost time to feed them again, but it's pouring with rain, so I'm having a cup of coffee and talking to you, while there's a bit of signal.

Pliny's a bit more than a skin. It's also a framework, and it's strong enough to support Ripley. Don't worry, your favorite skin isn't going anywhere, and neither is h2g2.
