Patriotism a la USA et UK
Posted Mar 29, 2007
I was thinking today about the difference in patriotism between that practised in the US and that practiced in the UK. The patriotism we get shown, in the UK, from the US is the U.S.A. chanting flag waving national anthem singing veriety. Where as in the UK we tend not to do stuff like that. We tend to only sing the national anthem and wave flags at 'official' events and functions and other than football fans, who also wave flags and stuff and don't count, we very rarely chant. Also the chanting, flag waving etc. seem to be a new thing which appears to be something we're importing from the US.
The conclusion I came to as to the reasoning behind this is that the US is trying to convince themselves and everyone else how great they are where as we, the UK, already know that we're the greatest nation in the world and anyone who's opinion matters already knows this and so doesn't need to be told.
It's a bit like how we usedbe with jewellery. It always used to be very plain and understated as anyone who needed to know how expensive it was would know, where as there is a distressing trend to wear gaudy, vugar and generaly tastelessly overstated jewwellery which I can only think is the fault of the US and people like Victoria Beckham.

Joe Straczynski is doing some more B5 movies and Galen's in at least one, so Crusade may get to be finished off in the new movies.
Hopefully we'll also get another Legend Of The Rangers movie and some funky teep action with the excelently psychotic Lyta.
And the Transformers movie, TNMT and Diary of The Dead still haven't been released yet...speeking of which I think someone, probably not George Romero, should do Dairy of The Dead, zombie cows would rock.

All about yesterday
Posted Feb 17, 2007
Two things of note happened yesterday, one good and, depending on your point of view, one not so good.
First the good one, while browsing the 'local' bookshop I found, and subsequently purchased, a set of photographic plates. These were titeled China and the collection was edited by China Pictorial, a kind of Chinese Picture Post, and with an introduction by Soong Ching Ling, who was Honorary President of The People's Republic of China. The collection appears to date from the early 1950s and is in fairly good condition. While trying to find out more about it I managed to find one other copy for sale on the internet. The asking price for this other set was US$115, needles to say this is not how much I payed for my copy. I'm fairly chuffed about that.
Now the second item. Last night when I was walking Shona she was attacked by a cat. Understandably she wasn't too impressed with this, picked up the cat and threw it against a hedge. The cat, seemingly realising that it was out matched, decided that doing a runner was it's best option. Shona
, still angry about being assaulted, shouted after it as it ran off up the road. When we got home we discovered that the cat had scratched Shona
's ear and caused it to bleed. Her ears are very sensitive and she is known to hold grudges, I doubt she'll forget that cat and it, the cat, would be well advised to avoid her in future.
