pheloxi, certainly the phone company knows who is calling whom, but MY NUMBER IS NOT SHOWN ! That is nothing I can choose, it just is a fact, ok ? And no number is shown on my phone, another thing I can't choose.

B'Elana,
yes, but not at your own phone.
your phone number is most likely the phone company's registration number for bills:
- call ID "switched on" for recieving a call and calling some one.
- phoneline: nornal or ISDN.
- a list of calls you make and recieve.
you have choice to use it or not.
you have choice to show this on your bills.
it is all computerised. most likely by siemens phone "dispatch" system.

Being ex directory has no connection with "caller display"
In the UK you can set, via BT to have your number withheld, so it will not show up on caller display systems and is not given out when the person receiving the call dialls 1471 to check the number of the last caller. For the life of me I can't remember how this is set up but no doubt could find out if necessary.
Being ex directory just means your number is not listed in phone books or included on web based directory enquiry services etc so marketing companies who plough through directories will never find you

Yes that is true, but just because a person is ex-directory does not automatically mean that their number is withheld from the caller display system, that is all I was saying.

On my Telephone I have a caller reject system. If it is a number with held caller, they cannot get through to me and have to reveal their number. This is a service offered by BT here in England. If there is no record of the number they can still get through. When I have these annoying advert or selling phone calls I turn the tables on them by asking them simlair questions to the ones they ask me and run up their telephone bills.
The reason I'm here actually pheloxi is to request your permission to put you on my friends list. Do you object?

I'm with LW on this one, pheloxi. I've certainly been pleased when I've been added to someone's list but if you both agree first I think it's better. You never know, and contrarywise it's nice to know...
