I've once seen a report where people were asked to pay high fees just for answering a call on their mobile

Yes, it's a nuisance. We once had a weird call, so I hung up, the phone rang again, it was the same thing, apparently coming from a tape, I had to cut the phone connection to make it stop ringing the moment I hang up. It was 2.00am

you got one from US side of the world
there should be phone call screening software. if a company called they should fill in their name and address so I can send a bill. if they speak to me agree to pay the bill.
they can request complete agreement, which includes at least one of their products for free or 6 months magazine subscription for free. no need cancellation after 6 months of magazine subscription. not paying or not holding to agreement will be fined every 14 days.
sounds like I thought about this!

In this country, if you're on British Telecom, (maybe some others), you can have caller display. You need a telephone with a display, but if you haven't got one, they're pretty standard now in the shops and cheap. Unless I'm reasonably sure who's calling, I don't answer.

caller ID would work if you did not have people who have secret numbers. since most con artists and companies have their caller ID blocked you can not see who is calling!

Jabberwock Posted Jan 7, 2006
If I can't see the number, I don't answer, pheloxi, as it's a sure sign it's a sales pitch or a con. If the number's withheld for any other reason, the caller usually leaves a message. If not, tough.
Safety first!

Our phone line is analogue, noot ISDN, so our number isn't transmitted. Fortunately, people tend to answer my calls

Jabberwock Posted Jan 7, 2006
Can't you ask them to leave messages if you don't answer? I would presume they'd do that any way. Happens to me when e.g. they call from work. At other times people call when I expect them. As I said, if there are other circumstances, then that's tough, it's just one of those things. Unwanted intrusive calls make me furious

Should add that since I've implemented this policy unwanted calls have dwindled to almost none. There's no confirmation to those creeps that this number is still in operation.

Jab,
I do not like calling people so if they call I answer...
B'Elana,
your phone mumber is not transmited from your own phone, but your phone is connected by wires to the phone commpany's dispatch. if you make a call your number is send in advance from the phone commpany's dispatch to the person you called. your phone does not even know your phone number. it get its signals from phone commpany's dispatch, which know knows which cable you are phone is on!

In the UK BT offer / recommend a service called "The Telephone Preference Service" http://mpsonline.org.uk/tps/ once you register you should be saved from unwanted sales calls and the good thing is that it is a free service.
It also helps if you are ex directory.
I am both of these and can honestly say I have not been bothered by unwanted phone calls at all.
Another tip from a friend is if you receive a marketing call, say hold on a second and then just leave the handset off the hook. It will cost the marketing company!!

Pheloxi, you're wrong on this one, my phone number is not shown on any phone I call, it's an option we don't have with the analogue line. This means, that no phone numbers are shown on our phone, either, even if the callers are with ISDN. But I don't mind, it's been like this since the very first phone was invented.

dear B'Elana,
it is not done at your own phone, but at the phone commpany's dispatch. they can stop it from showing at the person calling with your request or their advice. if the number was with held at your phone how would the phone commpany's dispatch know who is calling who and who to send the bill to!
the connection are always made in the phone company's dispatch at your own phone! the numbers you push in are send to phone commpany's dispatch. your phone can be used at any house with ISDN lines.
phone company's dispatch are computers not some ladies connecting one phone number with another phone number(s).
there is one more way you can stop the person you are calling seeing your by using *31* (normal lines) or *61* (for ISDN) before a phone number you call, then can not see your number!
you are probably ex-directory like Wendy is talking about!
