h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Hi, I am thinking what with the withering away of askh2g2 whether you might know of any interweb forum in which discussions of a sciencey, humanisty, religiousity nature might be had and in an overall gently spirited, open-minded kind of way. Perhaps something similar to h2g2 but a little more active.

I have been thinking along similar lines.
My experience of other bits of the interwebs
has never found anything to compare with the
best of h2g2 as it were.

I read somewhere that Edward the Bonobo has joined facebook to discuss matters. I am sort of concerned about facebook because of all its policies on recording and making use of personal information.

goes without saying precautions are taken, with information used with email but are plenty of disposable,email addy and they can only use what you give them...

The Facebook is too public for me. And there is no central theme.

(The Twitter seems ludicrous except for organising revolutions and
other 'simple' activities involving monosyllabic grunts.)

I did join FB a few years ago but I only ever accepted 3 friends
in spite of almost daily emails from 'Facebook' asking me to embrace
a whole gaggle of anonymous riff-raff. I simply ignore all these requests
so anyone from here who has tried to be-friend me has likely been put off -
for which I am sorry but I just don't know who among these hundreds
of 'recommended' friends might have similar interests or even be an
old hootoo friend.

I am saddened to realise so many from hootoo now spend more time on
the FB and the Twitter - the formats just seem wrong compared to the
layout of things here. The clutter of images and the complete lack of
moderation is quite unsettling.

I do follow one of my FB friends, a refugee from h2g2, from time to time
but only because I got to know her here and know that whatever she posts
will at least be humourous even if she is sharing with an extended family.
(Who are generally as eccentric and interesting as she is.)

I also started a Yahoo forum n2g2@yahoogroups way back in early 2001
during the Great Vogon Detour. n2g2 stood for Nowhere2Go2 when the
original h2g2 went dark. We had 150 members for a while. It went on
well into the BBC days because of stringent Beeb moderation and their
refusal to allow us to post outside links.

In recent months n2g2 has died back to a very few (four at last count)
who are posting less and less and even less. Not a bad 12 year run
though!

Feel free to sign on there if only to carry on a discussion of seeking
another refuge. And do some random searches of our earlier posts -
we did have some good times and because I am the only one with
the power to censor, moderate, delete or ban, no one ever has been.

I followed logicus' link and joined the FB Philosophers yesterday.
At first nothing happened. I suspect some background oversight
was at work.

Today I seem to be acceptable and can see a series of converstions
which I will be having a look at later.

Wonder would happen there if I started one called 'Where Can I Find
Some Nice Friendly Girls'? Which as I'm sure you all know turned out
to be one of h2g2's most successful ongoing threads.

BTW: If anyone joined n2g2 you should get an autobot welcome; let
me know if it's not working - we haven't had any new members for
quite a while.

pushing a like button will man you see updates or news feed about that "like" specially in the case of "company". Or in some cases you will see any new comments or likes about the likes if it was a personal picture or comment. Try rooting about my page see what ingo you can find out about me, then send me a Friends request and take another look after I've accepted you and it will give you an idea of what you will be sharing ect,,

Like I see you will be getting a load of "gumff" from yahoo, don't like a lot of there vids as they keep freezing and 30 sc of advert for a ten sec clip that ain't that interesting after all..

re n2g2 there is some one using "n2g2/124337187602784" from Sri Lanka

One of the biggest losses to askh2g2 was ed the bonobo as he voiced a form of modified Marxism / anti-neoliberal 'ish viewpoint that is more or less missing now. We don't have anyone prepared to argue from a religion viewpoint as they tend to take flight once one tries to question / get to the bottom of their belief systems (plus they tend to be bluntly treated by some of the more fundamentalist atheists on these boards).

Saw yesterday a threat by you to join the absentees such as
Edwardo the Monkey you mention and lament above. If you
do I will be left to lament your going, so I ask you to reread
your last post above and suggest that it would be unfair of
you to wish those same lamentations on me.

The problem is askh2g2 is now a small pool of contributors and through responses to my comments I get to learn something about them and the way that they think ... there is just not enough people willing to think beyond there own self imposed limits ... and I find there is not much more for me to learn from them (apart from maybe specific information that I might also get elsewhere) ... and I know that I peeve many of them off ... and I do get a bit carried away at times ... so I am thinking what is the point.

I have learnt quite a lot from you and I really like the way you create ambiguity and hence multiple meanings through the use of relaxing the rules of the written language ... a bit like James Joyce but Joyce went way too far. I don't see you around much nowadays and I had thought you had fled the camp to join farce-book or something.

So I am going to try and limit myself from askh2g2 and give feedback in peer review on any entries I might find interesting and maybe provide a contribution here and there on some personal space conversations I might find interesting & a little more tolerant to my mode of commenting - such as the cactus daydream one. So I am not planning on disappearing.

Edwardo (and others) went through the same roller coaster ride of
satisfaction and frustration generated by multiple negative postings.

Some of us tried to say that we really did appreciate him and his
opinions while others were less friendly. Life is like that. All groups
from choirs to police forces have personality conflict. Why should
cyberspace be any different - it aint all shiny.

Curiously, those who post anti-social didactic-rejections can often
be very successful in driving some of the best and brightest away.
Such behaviour is not specifically against the house rules. In the
Video Gaming Whirled eliminating an enemy is considered a point-
scoring good.

I have seen many otherwise intelligent people who may offer bright
new approaches and perspectives to thinking or writing but who FAIL
to learn to accept rejection and ignore the hoi-poloi. Edwardo had hit
his own re-set button many times but kept falling into the same trap
of thinking he needed to achieve an impossibly high approval rating.

It's a classic addiction spiral.

And as this is a private conversation between the two of us I shall expect
it to pass moderation but later be yikesed by someone wearing their own
Halo way too tight who may be trying to see us both gone. In which case
at least you will know the reasons for my absence.

Well semi private some of us will still see these posts, I still mourn the loss of Ican which used to be an internal message system (and had a group fuction) as well as direct links to Gov bodies on h2g2 but like BotF and many other has disappeared completely along with all the posts, presume Ican did via pressure from Gov as would have resulted in lots of MP,Councils getting gripes in their in-boxes as was easy to navigate and find those direct links.

Mostly lurk on h2g2 now, due to many of the interesting contributors having departed and so few new ones appearing.
