smiley - roflsmiley - ok

We had a choir director at school. He was a nice guy, but he wasn't small, and he was a jazz musician. He'd play the pianos at school so hard they had to be re-tuned every couple of months.

The school authorities complained about the expense. smiley - winkeye

That's sad. smiley - sadface Even in my elementary school in the South, where we had very little in the way of equipment, we had a piano. It was old and not fancy, but it was good enough for them to get a piano teacher in for a piano class once a week. smiley - smiley I forget what my parents paid for the lessons, but it wasn't much at all, since everyone kicked in.

Mr Kidd was my first piano teacher other than my mom. Nice man. smiley - smiley Good with little kids - we were 7 years old.

The piano tuner was here today. smiley - smiley He not only did a great job, but he also gave me a tip for how to make my Yamaha keyboard sound better. smiley - smiley And he didn't charge extra for that!

He's a guitarist himself - also gave me a homemade CD. smiley - magic

Not my dad's attitude at all. smiley - laugh He was born in what you'd call a shanty, practically. No running water, no electricity. Out in the country on a mountainside. They were subsistence farmers. The elementary school was one-room. They walked, carried their lunches in buckets - leftovers from yesterday's dinners.

My dad worked on the farm, cut lumber with his dad for a dollar a day, rode a train up to Detroit the summer he was 16 to work in a stockyard to pay off the family mortgage. Came home in fall to go to school. Did well in all his subjects - even had 'agriculture' as a subject. smiley - rofl Went to the army in 1944, ended up in Germany, fighting his way through the Rhineland.

He knew exactly what he wanted from the GI Bill after the war, and he got it: an engineering degree from a university.

You couldn't tell those people that education wasn't for them. smiley - laugh They'd shoot you - and they were darn good shots. smiley - winkeye A lot of those mountain boys turned into doctors, lawyers, and engineers. You couldn't stop them.
