h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I almost never want to link to the New York Times. Not because they aren't a good newspaper: they attract great writers. But because they only give people 10 freebies a month before they put up a paywall. I don't like to interfere with browsers' choices.

But this article is a must-read, seriously. The writer, Sabrina Tavernise, did a superior job of good, old-fashioned journalism. She stuck with that story. The result is both informative and encouraging. It's called 'The Two Americans'.

In Fort Smith, Arkansas, a mosque was vandalised with spray paint. Some teenagers were arrested. One of them had pangs of remorse, and wrote a letter of apology. The congregants at the mosque went to bat for the young man, got him probation when the state wanted to throw away the key. It's a good story.

That's not what I appreciate. What I appreciate is the way the writer listened to everyone involved. Got the tale from all angles. The result is a well-rounded portrayal of what happened, and life in Fort Smith, and the lives of its diverse citizens.

Also, if you read carefully, you'll notice that there are several hints in that article as to what we could do about racism and violence in this country. I mean, if people had a mind to. If they had the character of Hisham Yasin and his fellow mosque members...
