h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I've just now used the Edited Guide for its most important purpose - settling disputes.

Me, reading today's copy aloud: 'Art Team: make me a diagram of HMS Victory. Label the following: yadda yadda, the yardarm is that crosspiece, length, height, crew complement...'

Elektra: '850? Is that right?'

Me: 'Close enough.'

Elektra:'Are you sure?'

Me: 'Okay,I'll google...' First item comes up...'Aha! 837, it says. I should add that to my bibliography...'

Which is when I notice that this invaluable information came to me courtesy of h2g2, Florida Sailor, and bobstafford. Thank you,all.You make my work easier.

I should say thank you more often. As Post Editor, I spend a lot of time snarking about, encouraging fiction, anecdotes, artwork, humour, and all manner of not-particularly-factual content. All of which is good - we need it, we enjoy it, and I'm proud of it.

But I'd also like to take a moment to thank everyone who works on the Edited Guide. The information we put in there raises the quality of the internet.

And sometimes, it makes schoolkids smarter.

If you ever get the chance, you must visit Victory. Read all you like about it, but there's so much you get from roaming the decks that cannot be put into words. That's the case with just about everything in life.

Though, it's the job of the Edited Guide to try.

I've never seen Victory up close, but as kids, we used to be allowed to see and touch the 'Memphis Belle', a famous B-17. Tactile history is so much richer.
