A welcome sound has just wafted its way toward our porch across the holler from the next ridge: the neighbours over there have acquired a bagpiper.

Either that, or somebody's hoover is in serious trouble.

We wish we knew which house it was. We'd like to send over requests. Whoever it is plays pretty good.

I don't know whether it's true or not, but I was once told that

The farther from the bag you are
The sweeter the chanter sounds.

I once heard a story about a Scotsman who stopped at a small country Restaurant, he kept getting up and looking out the window at his car in the parking lot.

'What are you so worried about?' asked the staff.

'Well', he replied, ' I left my pipes in the back seat, and I'm afraid some one might steal them.'

The staff assured him that nobody in the town would take his bagpipe. Assured he relaxed and enjoyed his meal.

When he left, his worst fears were realized, somebody had smashed the rear window of his car!

When he forced himself to look at the backseat - he found three other bagpipes laying next to his own.

I've just bought a hurdy-gurdy and I think it will have a similar effect.

I'm a fan of both instruments, but I get you, Vip.

Have fun with that hurdy-gurdy. Although I don't think it's classified as a weapon of war, which the bagpipe is.
