Memories of a January

Does anybody remember the day they met Ford Prefect and his cousin Zephod? I do, I remember clearly, not because they changed my life in any profound way, but because they changed my life in such a profound way. My encounter with Ford is straight from the pages of the Guide itself, although, it is part of a chapter that Douglas left out, mostly because I would really be the only one who cared. Lovers of the guide will accuse me of retrospective editing, but that is not the case. My encounter took place before I was introduced to the Guide.

December - When we first meet our new friend he is driving away from a lake in upper Westchester county. As he continues to admire the way the sun continues to rise throughout the earlier part of the day he notices a white BMW making its way passed him on the highway. At the same time a group of crows takes flight from the side of the road, one of which was struck by the BMW.

At that exact moment, I developed a theory of flight that requires forgetting about the ground, and most of all the gravitational pull of the Earth. Now this is not nearly as simple a task as described. First, the ground is one of the most diffiicult of items to forget, especially if you've ever fallen down. Second, gravity is an imutable law of physics. Even if current thoughts are correct and the further you get away from a star, the more Gravity begins to push you away, we here on Earth are too close to the sun and can't get far enough away to subvert gravity. Furthermore, I was returning from visting a chef who spent many hours cooking some of the most incredible food, so I was feeling slightly more controlled by gravity. Determined to prove my theory, I pulled off to the side of the road, and began to greive the crow looking up (which proved to be quite revealing).

I stared deep into the sky waiting for something to happen. I stopped thinking all together and just continued to stare, at which point I found myself face to face with a Hawk. I was at first unconcerned, more amazed then anything else, but that was to be short lived. I came to the sudden realization that the Hawk had not come to me but I to it, and suddenly began to fall towards the Earth's surface a victim of Gravity. Mere moments before the inevitable, I remembered the Hawks expression of surprise and landed saftely.

January - I had kept my eperience to myself for a short while, thinking that no one would care; that is until I stopped by my friends house during a short storytellers meeting. I was asked to regail those who were gathered with a tale, as I have been known to break in to tale from the middle of the story. There was only one tale I could think to tell. It didn't take long to finish, and by the time I had, I had risen and fell multiple times.

Without a word being spoken, a man rose from the back of the road and handed to me the most curious book. It was leather bound, plastic covered, with gold leaf pagination, and the simple words, "The Complete Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" written on the cover. He told me this book woudl explain everything that ailed me.

February - I had read the 5 part trilogy many times, each time hoping to find today.
