Just thought I'd stop by.... Have a mufflewhump!

I've been gathering up people to say that they're maybe interested in a meet next summer, and I realized I should try to round up people living in California, as being more likely to be able to comesmiley - laugh If you're interested, it's at A813061

Of course, you may be planning to head home for the summer...

being that I don't think my father would let me bring my hubby and kid back to MT for the summer, I'll say yes. Also, Courtesy38 and the Brit in San Diego, ste.

I would be totally into the idea. Absolutely. I love garlic, I love people, and I love food. What a great combo!!!!!!!!!!

There's been a question asked about who, of the people signed up to go to the Garlic meet, actually thinks they'll be able to go (F97200?thread=245550) Since I've no idea who is and isn't subscribed to the meet page, I volunteered to try to find out. Could you take a look at the page (A813061) and tell me, either there or here, what category you want me to put you in? Thanks!

Um, as much as I would like to be in the heck yeah category, put me down in the firm maybes, because being a mom and a student and all of that, frankly, I just can't commit this far in advance.

And of course I ended up being very very busy 3 days after I posted thatsmiley - laugh

So, anyway, the reason I went digging for this was that I was pretty sure I had a thread here... I know you're in Southern Cal, but where are you, again? Am I right in thinking you're in or near LA? The reason I'm asking is that I'm seriously considering applying to go on "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" While I know the chances of actually getting on are pretty low, it would be quite cool! Be one way of buying a house (for this area, $300,000 would buy a new house! Bit lower market than the rest of California!) The reason I bring this up is that, while travel and accomodations are taken care of if you're appearing on the show, you need to go to LA for an interview as part of the selection process, and you're on your own for that. If I apply, and make it to the interview part (and I'm right about where you live), do you maybe have a couch...? Of course, I haven't gotten any farther in the application process than printing out the app, so this may all be moot anyway.

Amy, I'm *near* LA by LA standards, but still a bit away, since I'm down in south Orange County (Irvine). Still, if you don't mind the drive, I do have a couch...

I seem to remember you saying, when we were discussing Jeffry and proto-Jeffries in the salon a few conversations ago, that you'd gotten D to reduce the sheer amount of stuff using a pile/reward system thingy? What were the details of that again? Whenever I actually get Faith to get rid of things, she ends up letting go of *maybe* a shopping-bag's-worthsmiley - groan Of course, I'm... not the best example myselfsmiley - blush

Well, here's the way I worked it (and it might work even better with Faith). First thing (if it's not around a birthday/holiday) you can do is explain that there are kids who don't have ANY toys, and wouldn't it be nice to share (you could also frame it biblicallyÉI'm sure there's a bible story or two -- or six! -- on sharing!) smiley - smiley

Around a birthday or christmas, the way I work it is 3 out for every one in. So if she gets six presents, she has to get rid of 18 things.

And of course, there's also the whole idea of 'aren't you too old for X?" But that only works once they hit a certain age!

Wasn't there something like a big pile, and for every X amount she got rid of, she got to keep 1 thing? Or was that another parent and kid? There was something else to it, too, but I don't remember what it wassmiley - erm

The "Some kids don't have any" bit results in the 1 shopping bag worth, and clothing's worse--doesn't help that her grandma keeps getting her clothing, and Faith usually doesn't change out of her school uniform. (Again, I'm not a great example--I had a nightgown that I wore for 10 years. Not too strange in an adult, but I got the thing when I was 3! More a nightshirt when it "disappeared", of course. Now that I think of it, some of my shirts, I've had for at least 20 years, but my top half hasn't changed size much during that time, except for a few months twice.) Too bad her birthday's not until July, though Valentine's and Easter usually result in gifts, and there's a monthly shopping thing with reward "money" in kid's church...
