My introduction
I live in the small town of Bedworth in North Warwickshire. I've lived there for the last six years, and if you've never heard of it, don't worry - I hadn't either until I moved there. Most people I knew assumed I was moving to Bedford. Perhaps I should write an entry on Bedworth...
I have a wife and two children aged 10 and 7, and between us we own one dog, one cat and a few goldfish.
I work for a major UK bank which I will not name because someone is bound to have a grievance against them. My wife is a full-time mother and homemaker, and does a bit of book-keeping on a self-employed basis. We are active members of a large, contemporary local church.
There are two works of fiction which influenced me significantly in my youth. The first was JRR Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" (and related works including "The Hobbit"), and the second was the "Hitchhiker's" saga. I was introduced to this by a somewhat eccentric classmate, and it was right up my street. I found the combination of hi-tech science fiction and Douglas Adams's dry but whacky sense of humour unbeatable. I read the original trilogy several times, and subsequently read the final two books (although, in my humble opinion, these were never quite up to the standard of the original three). My interest has recently been rekindled by the hype surrounding the film, and I've just starting re-reading all five books for the first time in years (though not all at the same time).
I think the idea of an online guide to life, the universe and everything, in line with Douglas Adams's original vision, is a brilliant use of the technology and access now available to us. Well done to the original h2g2 founders and to the BBC for creating and maintaining something genuinely worthwhile and enlightening.
