Oh!!!.... you mean... maybe... they were baked out of yeast, salt, flour, water!??
e-groups are groovy because they allow you to address all members of one organization or another at ONE place, and they can address you-- and you can check up on new happenings and concerns...
We also make polls...
YAY!!!

Yes, unless your e-mail address is known to the "moderator" or "owner" of the group and he/she can send you an invitation. So go to the link and press "Subscribe"
I am already in three and find them very productive. The screen is very user-friendly for everyone. It takes ages to load, though. And sets dozens of cookies - sometimes even when you're not even on the site.
You have the following functions:
*Anyone in the group can deposit a file or a link for all to use.
*A calendar for group events or deadlines
*You can e-mail the whole group or individuals in the group, directly from the egroup site
*You can opt to have all e-mails that are sent within the group to be posted to your usual messenger (I think this is the default option) Very busy people or half-hearted members can opt to just check out the messages by going on to the egroup site directly.
* You can keep your anonymity by always answering mail from the e-group site, which uses a profile you can set up yourself.
*You can join any number of groups, but as far as I can tell, you always have the same profile
*You can set up polls
* You can join or leave the group at any time
* Each group has a chatroom, which has already proved useful in the GerManiaConnection. Everything you have to say to each other doesn't have to be stored for ever, as it would be if you conversed in an H2G2 forum.
For example, I have asked everyone in the GerManiaConnection to post a suggestion for a GMC Christmas card. Tomorrow I shall then set up a poll for the members to vote for the best entry, which we will then make public (somehow) on H2G2. (It's all advertising, really!!!) The fact that not many people have posted entries yet does not detract from the interesting possibilities these functions offer.
So this e-group thing is really quite good, and it takes the work away from the Group owner - e.g. you don't have to keep tabs on e-mail addresses yourself - the members do that. Apart from which, if you have a crash, all the messages are on the e-group server.
There are probably some disadvantages (maybe hidden in the cookies) but if you use it solely for the group purpose, I can't seen any great harm that can happen.

Of course you may! Even though I'm a bit worried that one of our tenors will forget all about looking at the conductor...
