Whither now?
Malabarista - now with added pony Started conversation May 31, 2012
I've just finished all the classes for my Master's, only the dissertation to go.
Now I have to think about finding a real job, in the real world. But I don't know where to look.
On the one hand, there are lots of things I miss about Germany. My family, places to walk, proper bread...
On the other hand, I have built up much more of a social and professional network here than I ever had there, and it would be a shame to leave it behind.
On the other other - er... on the one foot, there are lots of cool places I haven't seen yet, this is a natural break anyway, and it's the perfect time to travel, while I have only myself to think of.
And finally, on the other foot, I suppose the job market is hard everywhere, so I'd better take what I can get, wherever I can get it...
So, good people, badgers, small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri, etc - would you recommend where you are, what's the job market like, and can you think of anywhere that needs a little more Malabarista?

The only other architect I know is Portuguese and she has chosen to work in England. There is plenty of work in Portugal (she's more involved in restoring historical buildings) but no money to pay for it.

Although I would dearly love to invite you to come visit for a holiday, Mala, there is no work here at all. I am told that nepotism rules here as well.

You can come and work with me (in a Norman Foster building) in London, but we only have one vacancy, and that's for an IT professional. Or maybe as an intern (probably very low-paid).
Actually, you've given me an idea. Every few hundred yards in London you come across these TfL Bike stands (people have to register, then pay every time they borrow a bike).
I'm sure the mayor would be happy to extend the scheme to horses. It's worth an e-mail, surely?

Alas after 3 years our architect is about to finish their job (tbf half was planning permission...I hate listed buildings...notably when living in them)
Not much to do up in Derbyshire though

this just in: Boss Girl seems to have left the building, her job is being advertised. No idea what happened yet, though a former colleague says she'll give me the "gory details" when I phone her.
Considering applying for the job, but then, I'm more ambitious than that...

(And that sounds very interesting, TC - historical architecture is the field I'm aiming for!)

Two pretty big church restoration projects have just secured funding in Belfast, too. Just the tip of the iceberg; there's going to be a lot more money available in historical architecture here over the next number of years, now! Long story. I'll email, Mal.

Now I just need to learn Danish, Pierce. But it's quite simple, you just speak Platt and mumble a lot, right?
And that's excellent news, KB

Since you are already multilingual Danish should not be a problem worth mentioning
Seriously though, they are used to having all kinds of foreigners and a multilingual architect would probably be very welcome
