Mostly Offline vs Partly Online
Posted Jun 29, 2006
I've been Mostly Offline for a couple of months. And I never really got round to explaining why, what with being Mostly Offline and everything.
I'm expecting to be at least Partly Online for the next few months. So I figure I should get round to explaining, what with being Partly Online and everything.
So, what's been going on?
The time I spend on h2g2 is in direct proportion to the time I spend in hotels in far-flung exotic places (like Cardiff)! So, if I spend 3 months 'at home'/'out of work'/'between contracts' [delete as applicable], then I spend 3 months not really paying much attention to h2g2.
So what's changed?
Well, I'll be spending weekdays in Jersey for the next 6 months. So - assuming I can find some half decent internet cafes - I'll be spending 4 evenings a week on hootoo again.
Hey, I've already got an idea for something for PR, and something else for AWW. Oh, and there's my previous PR entry that I pulled when I went Mostly Offline 3 months ago.

I Feel a Time and Space (part 2)
Posted May 15, 2006
The Rectory windows were fairly ropey, so the Diocese had them replaced on Monday.
We moved in the Friday before though:
Saturday night, got woken up at least once an hour by the church bells.
Sunday morning, got woken once at 5 (we still hadn't put curtains up!)
Monday morning, got woken at 6 then quarter past, (who needs a snooze button!)
Then they put the new windows in - double glazed, shut properly, no gaps round the frames:
Tuesday morning, needed the alarm clock set for 6:45 again.
Tuesday night, we've resorted to leaving the windows open.

I Feel a Time and Space (that I _can_ explain)
Posted May 15, 2006
Nice to be out of the town (again). Yeah, OK it's still technically in the town, but you go one house north then there's nothing else 'till the Fishleigh estate (oh, and the Springwatch team are setting up again).
Nice also to be living next door to a church (again). I've pretty instantly got used to having the bells going off every 15 mins:
Ding ding ding dong (quarter past)
Dong ding ding dong, Dong ding ding dong (half past)
Ding dong ding dong, Dong ding ding dong, Ding ding ding dong (quarter to)
Dong ding ding dong, Dong ding ding dong, Ding dong ding dong, Dong ding ding dong (o'clock) Bong, bong, bong (etc)
I do like to keep an eye on the time. Now I can keep an _ear_ on the time. Shame the clock is on the far side of the church tower, 'cos I'd really like to be able to look out of the window and see the time too. Doesn't matter though. That 15 minute dose of bells just gets under your skin.
And always knowing where the moor is, is like always knowing where the sea was back in Broadstairs. The difference being that the sea is at sea level (), so sometime you just had to be content knowing the sea was there, whereas the moor is 600 meters above sea level, so you can't miss it really.
And like they say about Lundy and the mainland; "If you can't see Dartmoor from my house, it's raining".

Vicar of Dib... erm... Hatherleigh
Posted May 15, 2006
So we've moved into the Rectory. Lots of people peering up the drive thinking they've just caught a glimpse of the new vicar.
Just realised on Friday that we're going to get people turning up at the door on the basis of the sign on the gate. Had a yankee tourist wanting to see some church records. We haven't had the tramp or bag-lady turning up for a friendly word and a cup of water, but I guess it won't be long.
If anyone asks if I'm considering a career change, I just look at the missus and point out that the white collar would suit her better. And besides, she's had plenty of practice supplying the homeless with drinks and friendly banter back in Kent.

Bounce high enough and you'll see Dartmoor (part 2)
Posted May 15, 2006
As I said on 5 Jan, so much for bouncing...
And so much for the new house with the small slopey garden and the raised bit of lawn and the trampoline and the Dartmoor view...
Just before we moved in (6 months ago), the landlord dug the garden up to build a garage underneath it. The garden would be back before we moved in. It wasn't. Then it would be back a couple of weeks after we moved in. It wasn't. Then it would be back by Christmas. It wasn't. Then, at the end of January, when I suggested that we wouldn't pay full rent and would be looking for somewhere else to live, the garden would _definitely_ be back within 4 weeks. It wasn't.
So we found somewhere else to live.
And no trampolines have to get bounced on to see Dartmoor. Just stand in the garden. Or look out the window.
