I'll get my coat ... and slippers
Posted Oct 30, 2006
The people of Jersey are wearing coats. And I've now had my emergency backup pair of slippers especially imported over from the mainland.

Nipper Observations: Earning Money (6 in a series)
Posted Sep 6, 2006
We had our annual visit to McDonalds the other day. (You're thinking "annual visit? Freaks!") Let me digress... We do McDonalds once a year on the way back from holiday. Usually one of the McDs on the A303. Usually about 10pm. Usually been driving all day. Usually need some proper food. Usually decide McDs will do. Usually regret it.
Anyway. We sit down. There's this poster above our heads saying something like:
'McDonalds is hiring people like you. Rates of pay:
Age 14-16 from £5.00 per hour. Age 17-20 from £6.50 per hour. Age 21+ from £8.00 per hour'
Youngest nipper reads, then pipes up "Well I'm not starting work until I'm 21 then".
Well, that's one way of looking at it.

Nipper Observations: Pocket Money ( in a series)
Posted Sep 6, 2006
Eldest nipper decided at the start of the summer holidays that he'd like to do some jobs around the house for extra pocket money. He needs a tenner a month to pay for a game rental subscription for the ps2, so we've assigned some jobs at £2.50 a week. Trouble is, he'd rather not do the work. But now he has to. £10. Monthly. Welcome to the world of bill paying! It's a slippery slope.
Youngest nipper meanwhile has decided that she's quite happy to _not_ have the money and _not_ do the work. She'd rather "sit around all day and read books".
The nippers' attitudes to money are mirrored by their 'Sims' characters on the Playstation:
Eldest nipper's Sims character is going to work each day. He's trying to get promotion, trying to earn money to pay for stuff.
Youngest nipper's Sims character doesn't do work. She bought an easel and paints a few pictures each day ... if she feels like it. She sells these pictures and seems to be making ends meet.
Hmmm. I see the future.
