h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

As we were driving home today, (or technically yesterday) a rabbit ran out in front of our car. We stopped in time, just barely, but the ordeal wasn't to end there. I don't know why, but instead of freezing, as rabbits are known to do, it hopped about in a frenzied panic...ziggzagging back across the road the way it had come. For a moment there was relief, and the thought flitted through my mind that, in an odd way, it looked kind of beautiful running across the tarmack towards the hedge...That's when another car, horn blaring, swerved past us and ran the poor thing over.

And then the car was gone, and the rabbit just lay there twitching in circles. After a few moments we seemed to come to the conclusion that the rabbit was in pain, and probably wouldn't survive long, especially on such a bitingly cold night. So, callous as it sounds, we drove forwards and over the rabbit. I hope that was the end of it's suffering. I really do hope that.

I don't know how you are supposed to show respect to a dead animal. Especially a wild one that you didn't know. But I'm writing this journal entry as a marker, to go with the one in my mind. Last night I saw an animal injured and left to die. I don't know if there could have been a kinder way to ease it's pain, and I don't know what became of it.

But, rabbit, last night I saw you hit by a car. I was there, and I cared. I remember. I guess that's all I can do now.

Life is precious.

Strange because it feels like something that you shouldn't make a fuss about. It'd almost be easy to shrug and say that's life. Which is really wrong when you consder something died.

U have got guts! I admire your courage!

Poor you Peace, and poor rabbit too. I'm sorry that happened. I think it's lovely of you to make this little marker for the rabbit.
