Gnomon - time to move on

Yes, the ancient people did cover the entrance with a stone (bricks hadn't reached Ireland yet). But the entrance/exit was always left visible so it seems to have had some significance. In area where there wasn't much soil to build a mound, portal dolmens were popular. These were just a stylised doorway facing east made from large slabs.

Curious. How do we know there wasn't a heap of earth covering it, that has been weathered away?

How do we know whether they thought that spirits came and went? We don't even know anything about their language, it seems.

We don't know what they thought about spirits. But it interesting that they lined the tombs up with the rising or setting sun on certain significant dates, even though the sun could not normally shine into the tomb because the "portal" was blocked by a large stone.

It used to be thought that portal dolmens were all that is left of a mound that has worn away. But they are most common in places like the Burren where there is very little surface soil to make a mound. It's now thought that they were built as free-standing stones with perhaps a hill of a foot or so around their base.

A lot of menhir would agree with that.

My Hobbits entry has been accepted and, since it was an Update of a Mostly Harmless entry, has be been put directly into the Edited Guide without being sub-edited. A

Thanks to Recumbentman for his work in writing that entry, although he refused to accept a co-authorship.

That improves the coverage of Tolkien in the Guide immensely.

I hope you like it. You can get an audiobook version read by Christopher Lee too.

I multitask by listening to music on my stereo while reading. Listening to an audiobook would not be as productive..... But thanks for suggesting it.

Audiobooks (or Radioplays like HHGttG) are good for multitasking when doing drudgery; routine, repetitive work that doesn't occupy much of one's mind. Like dish washing, driving, or my job. smiley - winkeye

I agree, but.....

I don't drive long distances often enough to finish an audiobook. What happens if I forgot what came before by the time I get a long drive again? smiley - huh

My sister drives long distances, so it'as a great choice for her.

I frequently listen to channel 148 on Sirius XM for vintage radio drama and comedy.

Sometimes, at the end of the drive, I wait for the end of the story before disembarking.

Two entries picked today:

Tolkien's Elves
The Man Mo Temple Hong Kong

I'm in a bit of a writing lull now. I've covered all the aspects of Tolkien and his works that I want to, and have written about all the interesting things I saw in Turkey and China.

But I still have 9 entries in Peer Review.

Another one picked:

Orcs

So there are now only 8 entries in Peer Review.

I don't recall every seeing one. They certainly aren't common round here. We get mostly whites, Peacock, Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell, Holly Blue, Painted Lady, Comma, Meadow Brown. At least, they are the most frequenters to my garden smiley - orangebutterfly
