h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

The family are heading to London tomorrow for a long weekend. We'll be back on Monday night. During that time, we're taking in a few shows. Mrs G and I will go to Mamma Mia on Saturday while the girls see Les Miseables, a show I detest. On Sunday we're all going to The Commitments. On Monday we're going to an ice bar where we'll be served cocktails in glasses made of ice. No doubt we'll do some shopping and see some sights as well.

I suppose "waterloo" might be the only concept common to the two shows.

Oooh! The Commitments - my absolute favourite. My sister is taking me to see that as a birthday present.

Our flight was not affected by the glitch. We're staying in Earl's Court.

ah Earl's Court. I stayed there with the Gruesomes a few years ago, I had totally forgotten about the police box outside the tube station. I though #1 was going to faint.

Faints at the sight of police?

It's one of those blue ones.

At the time the Earl's Court police box was put up, it was the only one in England outside of the Doctor Who studio.

I sometimes feint at the sight of fencing swords.

I used to work opposite Earl's Court station. I nearly had a cow when I turned up to work one morning and there was the Tardis.

It's practically impossible to find a phone booth these days, but you have a tardis? At least a phone booth would serve several realistic purposes -- sending/receiving phone calls, serving as a dressing room for Superman, giving college students the chance to see how many would fit inside, etc.]

I'm home from London. We all had a good time although my flu of two weeks ago has now spread to the rest of the family so none of us were entirely well. We did manage to see a few shows, listen to the Westminster Cathedral choir, and drink some cocktails out of glasses made of ice.

Now that I'm home, I'm going to seriously think about buying some Christmas presents.

paulh, you have obviously never tried to use a London phone booth, they are useless unless you have a UK credit card. there is no option to call an operator to make a call to reverse the charges.

I think Harry Potter used a London phone booth to get down to the Ministry of magic headquarters. I was not there when he did it, which is just as well, as I am not magical....

But that was the visitors' entrance, so it might have worked.

And where, pray, can you drink out of glasses made of ice? Don't your lips stick to the ice? And do you have to gulp it down before the ice melts?

The room is chilled to some very cold temperature so the glass doesn't melt and we were fitted out with thick gloves so that we could hold the glasses. Strangely, your lips don't stick to the glass, perhaps because of the liquid in it. I think I said earlier that it was minus 18 degrees (normal deep freeze temperature), but I think on reflection that it wasn't that cold - I could go around for a minute or two without a hood, and my head is not covered with hair as insulation. Having experienced minus 20 degrees in the ice sculpture exhibition in Florida, that was much colder.
