I sat with him yesterday. He's still breathing steadily but each day they increase his painkiller dose as his body deteriorates.

My father died early this morning. He was 89 and had a good and full life.
He was born in a one-roomed tenement, survived a deprived childhood and got a scholarship to university. He ended up with a very well-paid job in the Civil Service. He was married twice, each time for nearly 30 years, which is more than most of us can achieve even once.
And of course, he had five wonderful children.
He'd been going steadily downhill for the last two years, so we've had time to get used to being without him, but it will still be strange.
