Gnomon - time to move on

El passed her cello exams. With 95%! That's quite impressive, for Grade 8 Cello.

Dear Gnoman,

How absolutely wonderful You must all be so thrilled. Is she going to be a female Pablo Casals? Sadly I never heard him, but I loved his recordings and always think of him when I read about Spain and the Pyrenees. !!

Please do congratulate her. I really love the 'cello. Now my friend you are going to have to start saving up to give her a really wonderful instrument - which you must quite obviously insure!!

Go well,

Christiane

I wouldn't be surprised if she gets a scholarship based on that result. A few years ago she got such a good result in her cello exams that she got a scholarship (her fees paid for the next year), but the music school, in the grand old tradition of anything run by musicians, forgot to tell us for over a year. They ended up sending me a cheque as a refund of fees I had already paid.

Gnomon - time to move on

Hi Christiane.

Her cello teacher is already grumbling about the fact that her cello (which only cost €2,700) isn't loud enough. There's an operation that can be done to increase the volume, but at the expense of a nice tone. We could buy a louder one - the cello shop had a nice one for €4,500 and the sky's the limit.

I've heard that a cellist intending to make a living playing solos such as the Elgar Cello Concerto would pay €60,000 - €100,000 for a good cello, taking out a mortgage on it.

Jacqueline du Pré's godmother bought her a Stradivarius cello for $90,000 in 1964. I wonder what that would amount to in modern money.

According to the "MeasuringWorth" website, that $90,000 in 1964 would be worth about £400,000 today.

Impressive!

Is she interested in playing professionally?

She plays in a couple of student orchestras, but probably wouldn't want to earn a living as a musician.

She has many strings to her bow. But 95 at Grade 8 is seriously good smiley - ok
