My neighbour Ollie

A couple of months ago some students moved in next door.

Ollie was the first to arrive. I was sitting outside in the late afternoon sunshine..then suddenly he was there next door in the garden.

The next door neighbour was going to rent out the place I knew, and naturally I was a bit anxious about who might move in..and how they might be. (The owner's wife had died a few months ago from a severe stroke. She was lovely. An old Jamaican woman. We swapped plants and talked about the weather. One night she actually slept on my sofa because she hadn't got her key, and didn't want to bother her family late at night. It was a gentle and easy relationship.)

So I saw the young man and said hallo. Nearly the first thing he said to me was that he was a 'mod'. That was a bit strange..but touching somehow. He quickly was telling me all about his scooter. I talked about the past when I had a Moto Guzzi bike..straight off he said, 'Oh you are a rocker then?'. The other students gradually have moved in.

One of the women told me Ollie is the 'man' of the house. I said what about the other male student? She said, oh no he always offers to do the washing up..smiley - snork I was pleased to have neighbours with that type of humour.

Over the last few months and weeks we chat every so often. A few weeks ago his scooter arrived from the village near Birmingham where he comes from. (That was something he said almost immediately..and to do with wanting to be good neighbours, like in his village.

Last night I arrived at the shop as Ollie did on his scooter. It's a bit beat up and the most amazing shade of deep sea blue..he painted it himself.

But what I first noticed was his brilliant Mod helmet with that circular pattern smiley - mod

Then we had a good long chat.He is a musician as well as studying English at Goldsmiths.

He has a special aura to him..of smileyness, warmth and jokiness.

I'm bloodylucky to have such a special neighbour.

Between awake and asleep.

After all the big energy stuff of the last journal..I want to be quieter with this one..and the November weather here continues to be very very quiet.

But hearing that 1812 overture yesterday on the radio seemed to have a very good effect on me..it resolved something.

**

So do other people really relish those magic few moments when you are still conscious and awake..but you know you are sliding into sleep?

You want that moment to carry on it's so nice. But of course the next thing you know...you are awake again after a sleep.

The only time I remember being able to let that moment last was when I had bad tonsilitis as a youngster...and I was prescribed distalgesic painkillers..which are very strong..and a bit related to something a bit like mild morphine.

I was in this state where I could choose to stay awake and feel fine..or choose sleep..it didn't seem to matter.

I chose to stay awake for quite sometime..and then sleep.

I think they are much more careful about prescribing distalgesics now smiley - laugh They are magic..

Mephisto sends the sign.

I just got out drawer upon drawer of old poems and writings..

smiley - laugh There's so much. And I think half of it was already thrown away smiley - rofl

there's a lot of good stuff..and lots of rubbish..

Every so often I'm going to poem a journal.

This is one.

I had a long term relationship with a neuroscientist..he was married and a workaholic. We didn't get a lot of time together smiley - snork

Some aspects of our relationship were quite surreal. Like funny creative things we'd do.

One day an envelope arrived..my name and address printed. I opened it. All that was there were some yellow crystals.

I wrote this to do with it.

**

MEPHISTO SENDS THE SIGN

How strange methinks

What *can* these crystals be?

From whom camest they?

Ah ha!

Suspicion meets with confirmation,

As brimstone drops in flame appear;

And acrid fumes

Upon olefactory senses

Inflict their devilish airs.

This poem had a strange real life post script which I might talk about at some point.
