And I would never neglect the synthesizer as long as Robert John Godfrey lives and breathes

I'd like to join please.
I play the double bass (classical only: I don't know enough to manage jazz).
Favourite composers. Hmm. If they write a decent bassline, they're allright by me. Most russian composers are good at that, so can I nominate them all?
Favoutile bands. Ahhh. The list of bands I don't like is probably shorter (are you getting the impression that I'm easy to please?).
What do I want? Someone to tell me where concert A is on the doh ray me fah lo.... scale, please.

Kes Posted Oct 9, 2000
Currently at 440Hz ... but watch out! The technicians are now retuning the fortepiano to 413
Do you get fed up of being asked to play the bassoon part ... just this once ... ?

Sol Posted Oct 10, 2000
Eh?
Oh yes. And the trombone part, and the cello part, and the...... Mind you, even that isn't as iritating as composers who write note that aren't there. Why? Why do they do that?

Probably for the same reason that hymn-writers these days pitch everything for the soprano / tenor voice - they have no idea what the real range is for most people.

Sol Posted Oct 11, 2000
Yeah, real people seem to be much more comfortable at a lower pitch. Why, then, do most pop singers - especially men - have highish voices? That's another one that has been bothering me for years.

Just FYI for the established members, I'm back from vacation and will be updated the Guild pages today.
Just, Dr St Justin, this is the right place to join! But do tell us a little bit about yourself. Do you play an instrument or sing? What is your favorite composer? Favorite band? What would you like from the Guild?
Welcome, welcome to Just zis Guy and Solnushka. I'm glad to see you are both already feeling right at home here.
I did briefly check out Just zis Guy's entry on Howard Goodall. Even if it is not complete, it does deserve a Guild mention, so I will add it to our directory of music-related entries today. The Blackadder theme song is one of the few songs I learned to play by ear while very young.

Not too young, I hope - I feel old enough already after two hours' intensive workout at the gym!

You betcha. To avoid confusion, I'll include all the names. I'm also taking a look at the suggestions for the directory, and will probably add them today as well. Thanks!

Just FYI, there is an interesting thread for this page called "Handy Acronyms." We're trying to think up a snappy name or acronym for Guild members. So far we have MGM, MuG, and MOTMOG. Can anybody think of any others?

Here's an FYI for everybody. All those who are interested should vote on our acronym for Guild members at: http://www.h2g2.com/F52166?thread=83888 Also, I've changed out the weekly (or biweekly) links at the top of the Guild's main page.

Depends what he was influencing - if it was impressionable teenage girls to buy his albums and tickets to his concerts I would tend to agree. Mozart was a bit of a minger after all

Hello. I'm embarrassed to admit that it's taken me so long to find this Guild! Although not a professional msuician (now - I was one, briefly ), I still love music and play at least one of my guitars ever day. I'd love to join the Guild!
Here's my entry fee:
I play guitar, mostly. I own and play any of three electric guitars, a 12-string guitar, a Spanish classical guitar, or a "normal" steel-string acoustic guitar. I also play my electric bass guitar quite a bit. I have two saxohpones (an alto and a tenor) which I rarely play anymore but I also have a couple synthesizers that I play with a lot, one of which is a "proper" keyboard-type synth. I used to also play drums (both tuned and consussion-style) but I sold 'em all long ago in favor of electronic percussion - a decision I regret. I've been known to sing, too, on occasion.
I like so many composers, genres, and styles ... I think my favorite composers, on the whole, would have to be Bach and Beethoven. Still, I really like Chopin, Lizst, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Schubert, Mozart, etc ... the usual suspects. My favorite band is most likely Pink Floyd - but there are many bands I really like, too many to list here. I've written an article on Dick Dale (the King of the surf guitar!) which you can find at my page, so I obviously have a serious interest in his music as well. I've recently been tremendously interested in re-discovering the blues, particularly from the Mississippi - Chicago corridor and surrounding areas.
I'd like to contribute some material on the joys and limitations of home audio recording, specifically those opportunities presented to the home studio owner for digital recording and editing from analog sources. And anything else that pops to mind. As far as what I'd like to get from here, I'm enjoying learning and expanding my musical tastes and interests ... there's so much out there, and the net makes it very accessible!

Instrument- Alto and Baritone Saxophone
Favorite Performer- Gerry Mulligan (Gotta be the greatest jazz Bari player ever)
Things I'd like to see the Guild do- establish a repository of sheet music, lead sheets, etc, so long as it's at least quasi-legal.
