After a while boredom sets into every life and kick starts the cycle again (nobody stays constantly down or up but bounces between the two states)

Over and under stimulation

Over-stimulation leads to revolt as under-stimulation leads to searching the outside world for answers (the knight's quest / the philosophical or scientific questioning). It is city life as opposed to the country

Getting sucked in

Life kicks out what it doesn't want within and draws in what it senses it needs. Too much of something leads to violent rejection /ejection as too little leads to a feeding frenzy
