Late Great, Sir Neddy Seagoon
1971 I was sitting late one night in a large library. I had a big dictionary opened up and had my finger on every other word trying to translate the opening paragraph of Emanuel Kant's book, "Pure Reason". I had been struggling for about an hour when this young man in a dirty white tee shirt, mangled hair and the craziest darting eyes I had ever seen sat down across from me. To avoid confronting him was impossible and after about 5 minutes of him bouncing and rocking in a fetal position I looked up and said, Hello. He said immediately I feel safe talking to you because you are so extremely old and I have something important to tell you. I nodded. He leaned over and said, Imagine this. Imagine that the entire atmosphere covering the earth is a living organism. I said, that is very interesting. His eyes lit up and he giggled, Yes , and he looked very relieved to finally share this breathtaking insight with someone.
It wasn't until many years later after book 6 was written and the author stated that he couldn't return to write a book 7 did I recall that moment in 1971 with the looney.
If some had asked Douglas Adams if our atmosphere was a living organism he would have laughed out loud and said well of course it just a big gas bag. A gas bag who's gases we have breathing for the last 3.5 billion years. The oceans? Well that's simply the atmospheric gas bag peeing itself at night.
Upon these memories is why I took up the torch to keep Douglas Adams spirit alive and I am about to run into that dark cave with its burning red eyes of literary critics and bulbous phlegm headed snobs.

As I look over the castle wall I can see miles away a fast burning fuse traveling the twisted narrow road towards me. It's the angry villagers coming with bright flaming torches, pitchforks and loud baying hounds. They will approach and storm the castle walls but it will be too late. The monster has been sewn together and a crude life breathed into its pages. I hear them shouting, screaming as they race up the stone staircase to no avail.
I have gone to the window and set it free onto the world.
