Not really, it doesn't really belong in Askh2g2, so Hoo's PS makes sense to me as he was the original poster.

It "doesn't belong in Ask"??? Just how often do you "tidy up" Ask like this? I must say I've never noticed it happening before, but perhaps I just wasn't paying attention...
It's a question I thought worth asking, and I further thought the general user base might be interested in knowing the answer, if anyone could supply it. Which seems the very model of the sort of thing that belongs in Ask. But who am I to have an opinion?
Clearly the powers that be think otherwise... Whatevs, as I believe the young people say.

Threads can be closed, removed altogether, or moved
it is the new tidy, been happening for a while

Yes, some of us have been around long enough to know what is discussed on Askh2g2...and also that this is the first time I have known a thread be moved...a bit like thread titles being changed from the OPs preferred title...times are a changin...hey ho...

Where threads are moved on other sites they at least have 'decency' to tell it has been moved and to where rather than making it 'disappear'.

Believe it or not Hooloovoo, I agree with you that the Thread shouldn't have been closed and that this one shouldn't have been moved. However...
~*~Yeah, I'm *much* worse than a person committing a physical assault in spurious enforcement of a non-existent law. And I'm far more reprehensible than a state-owned international energy company using their enormous resources to abuse the judicial process and shut down peaceful protest about their activities.~*~
Yes, you are. And it's not because you "say mean things."

The thing that makes it slightly pointless about moving the thread from Ask to Hoo's House is that everyone who was subscribed to it (ie everyone subscribed to Ask) is still subscribed to this thread, and would be even if it was moved to the old Waterworks. If you really want to stifle dissent (or minor questionings of procedure) you need to move a thread and *make sure that no-one can find it*.

So, following your reasoning, I guess we can safely say that that is not the reason why it was moved, then.

Well, it does stop anyone else 'simply' looking at the thread on Ask.

It would be interesting to know what threads have been deleted totally just to see how much input by people has now been wasted.
It must annoy everyone when you enter a post on a thread and the internet eats it but to actually have input removed from the site...hmmm...unless it for legal reasons I find it hard to work out why threads should be deleted...tidiness certainly isn;t one of them.

Are we talking about deletions or closures? This thread was neither deleted nor closed. As I write, it is still open, and one can post in it. A different thread, which touched on French manners among other things, recently closed before I even discovered that I existed. As for outright deletions, I can't remember any at all, but this is likely due to my imperfect memory, or to not having known about them at the time they were still open.

Both...but it has been moved and hence harder to find if one wanted to discuss the subject matter of the thread.

>> "we're here to build the Guide to Life, the Universe and Everything (Earth Edition), not to host a chat room "
That's the first time I've seen that stated so baldly. Interesting. <<
Why is it then that when starting a linked conversation to a Guide article there is no listing support - it basically gets lost in the aether because no-one knows that a conversation has been started or recently posted to. The author of the Guide article might be long gone or just not interested in responding etc.
If the main goal of H2G2 is the Guide then I think more should be done in finding recent conversations started etc as per askh2g2 or the ask a science question forum. The only support the guide itself has is the search facility, it seems, but not much help if one wants to link a conversation to a guide article (since no-one can tell that a linked conversation has been posted ...).

Ps my above comment in no way implies any criticism of the current h2g2 managers etc which as I have stated previously I think are all brilliant for dedicating their time to the project etc. I'm just trying to learn more about H2G2 etc and providing comments on it.

We're working on that very thing Stone Wart.
We're getting the foundations of solid code in first, even this week we dropped the errors by 90 to 98%.

I'm going to go on record as supporting the idea that errors should be reduced by "90 to 99%." That will only leave my typos, which seem to resist efforts to reduce them.
