Mustard and Other Flavoured FAQ's

This space is in constant development and is much messier just now than it will be, the idea is to have it for FAQ's and Q&A's, especially for people from Mustard Land - you know who you are! But I hope it will also be useful for other BBC message board people faced with the transition to DNA.

Messages can be left here both to ask questions AND crucially provide answers, this is a community effort, generally by new folk for new folk.

Questions may get raised that only the Gods in their Tower can answer and they can be found here A3896436, but that should help develop ML 2 into a better place than it might otherwise be. I'd use the God's link for very technical questions only, no point in swamping it with general anxieties. Peta and Jim Lynn are the top techno bod's not the BBC shakers and movers - ie they do things rather than make policy.

This area here may also be a better place to speculate and ask questions than TB, I certainly think so!

I'm the editor not a guru and new here myself, so please leave the questions here and not on my home area. Thanks.

First FAQ - and the honour goes to U38364 AKA the Godfather of Mustard

Q: When I look at a thread, some of the people, including me, have googly eyes next to their name, and some don't. What's that all about?

A: In some of the skins, users who are online have eyeballs next to their name; if they log off or stop posting for a while they disappear. You can't lurk anonymously if you're logged in, but you can log out and lurk freely.

Q: How do I find those little smiley things?

A(1): Click on any smiley smiley - and you'll be taken to a page full of them, with instructions! smiley -

A(2): Click on A155909 and you'll be taken to another page full of them, then just copy the longcode from the list - including the < > part and then paste. Hint: this is helpful if you are using them a lot and so you can keep that page open as a seperate window. smiley -

Q: People keep calling me a "Researcher" - what's with that?

A: People who register with h2g2 are known as "Researchers". It's from the "HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy" stories.

Q: People keep talking about "Articles" and "Entries" - what are they? Are they the same thing?

A: Yup. The Guide is built around the ability for "Researchers" to write articles about, well, pretty much anything. If it's well researched and written it can be submitted for "Peer Review" and eventually become part of the "Edited Guide". You don't have to have anything to do with entries if you don't want to.

Q: I want to CatPee a posting - what's the procedure?

A: On h2g2, the "Linda" button (don't ask) is the equivalent of Mustardland's CatPee link. On clicking it, the Moderators are alerted to it. They review the posting and decide whether or not to allow it. Note, when a posting is successfully Linda'd / CatPeed on a DNA system, the replies do *not* disappear.

Q: I'm confused? Is the new Mustardland going to be like "Points of View" or like "h2g2"?

A: The new Mustardland will be based on the system running the "Points of View" board, but other facilities may be added if we ask for them. h2g2 is an example of "the full Monty" as things stand, with all the facilities that the DNA system supports at the moment turned on. The idea of signing up over here is just to see what we *can* do with Mustardland, figure out what we'd *like* to do with it (and what we'd like to do without) and request those features (like bold and italic text in conversations, or an "Email me if there is a reply" facility) that we *can't* do yet.

Q: I don't like the fact that people can go to my "Personal Space" and see a history of where I've been posting. What can I do about that?

A: If, after posting somewhere, you click the "Unsubscribe" link at the bottom of the page, that thread won't be listed on your Personal Space. You'll just have to develop a good memory if you want to find it again. smiley -

Q: Yikes! Apparently names in here are not unique! How can I be sure the person I'm responding to isn't a sockpuppet masquerading as someone I know?

A: Names aren't unique, but User Numbers are. Click on the name in the posting you're concerned about, and you'll be brought to that person's "User Space". Even if a sockpuppet has copied someone's User Space down to the last detail there are two giveaways... First, look at the list of conversations they are subscribed to, and second, look at the U-number in the address bar at the top of your browser. You'll find you start to recognise your friends' U-numbers pretty quickly... This is also handy when someone you know changes their name, and you need to figure out who it is that just said "Hello!" to you. smiley -

Q: Where are my posting numbers?

A: (Current) DNA-based systems don't display posting numbers for individual users, but we might ask for that in the new Mustardland if enough people think it's essential.

Q: How do I put a link to Grey Gables or Eddie's Cider Club on my personal space?

A: Assuming your Personal Space is using GuideML, you can use and respectively. When you preview the page they'll just show as numbers, but when you view the final page they will have magically transformed into the names of the establishments. smiley -

Q: How do I put a link to the Mustardland Mustering Station or the Mustard Flavoured FAQ's into my Personal Space?

A: The process is similar to above, but because these are Personal Spaces rather than Entries you need the codes in the form and .

Q: What's all this "GuideML" mumbo-jumbo?

A: It's a language for doing pretty things on your Personal Space, or in Entries / Articles. Some examples are -

A carriage return:

A blank line:

A header:
Title of my page

A sub-header: Slightly less important

A "divider":

An image:
(Lots of images are available at the h2g2 Picture Library)

Text emphasis: Bold, Italic and Underlined...

Link to a PS:

Link to an Entry / Article:

Link to an external site: C19

Marquee: This tag isn't supported by all browsers...
(It makes text or pictures move from side-to-side on your space; some people love it, some people hate it. smiley - )

All of the above, and much more, are discussed in detail over at the A187229.
