Welcome
Greetings,
My name is David, and I live in southrern California. I ran across this place quite by accident while searching for a quote from Mr. Adams, regarding deadlines, to hang on my office wall & annoy my boss.
As the nickname suggests, I work with relational databases (specifically Oracle). My work mainly consists of data modeling (see below *), software engineering, and ad-hoc database administration. Most of the projects that I work on are back end systems to support web sites, so I tend to look at thing like the pop up window and say, "Hmmm, the pop up windows self refreshes & sends back a cookie. I wonder if they report all these refreshes as page views to their advertisers?", or "Hmmm, I wonder if this part of the site is being outsourced?
I've lived in southern California most of my life, though I once moved up to northern California to be a ski bum for a year. Unfortunately there was no money in that.
I've been a fan of Mr. Adams since I first read hhgg back in Jr. High School (mostly while I was supposed to be reading my school text), and met him once when he was at a book singing event in the Los Angeles area; He is much taller in person than he appears to be in the tiny pictures inside the flaps of his books.
My other interests include snow skiing and skydiving (yes, I throw myself at the ground, but have yet to miss).
I also throughly enjoy Monty Python films and the TV show, but my wife just doesn't get it, so I usually have to sneak off to the other room, close the door, pop in a python video, & pretend to be watching an adult film in order to watch it.
*Data Modeling: Basically, I analyze other peoples businesses and design a way to store their data in such a way that no one else would ever be able to figure out how to retrieve it. This perpetuates job security.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
