As we are not a hugh site multiple accounts could be significant, especially if there was a small group of people who didn't partuculary like someone then it could be an issue.
I'm all for elections but I still not sure how I'd be able to participate in one, firstly cos of my potential eligabilty as is being discussed but secondly I'd opt out of voting for editors cos what I do I know about editing or what makes a good editor. So if I could I wouldn't.
So you could get peeps multiple voting and peeps not voting on a already small site

As well as rigging a ballot, and all that that entails, may I ask how the selection of nominees is proposed?
How many positions will there be? How important will it be for these people to be based in London? Somebody will need to be on hand to feed the hamsters for instance, but any idea on the geographical locations of other replacement italics?
If we have more nominations that posts, that is.
If we do have lots of people willing to stand, (poor crazy fools as I think they will be in the firing line and do so without pay) will they be self-nominated or will they have to be proposed and seconded?

We're invesigating there would be the Business Committee which would be elected at the AGM in London or at least in the UK, that would be dealing with the finances etc. Some of these people would need to be in the UK. They would be taking over the running of the BBC's legal, financial and technical teams.
I think the more controversial elections would be for the Editorial Team. These would be the onsite elections... and we haven't yet finalised the details: Basically they would be people who could take over from the italics and do what was needed. We haven't yet finalised how they would be elected, and how many we would need.
They could be based anywhere in the world, as long as they had an internet connection. I would imagine that 4 or 5 would be the right number.
I think some of the intermin committee would want to stand (I would to be honest) though some of them may not.

'If we do have lots of people willing to stand, will they be self-nominated or will they have to be proposed and seconded?'
I think nobody should be proposed who doesn't want to do it. So I think both should be possible but if someone is proposed by other people s/he first has to be asked if s/he would want to do the job at all.

How many voters do we expect?
How about sending a scanned, handwritten signature to an email for votes?
State your user name, and your real name, from an email that is registered. Should handwriting start to look too similar, ask the voter to explain...
Just brainfarting, I suppose.

it might work - if you have access to a scanner... so this would count me out.

Remember, we already have a history of on site voting which could be used for reference, that being the great Presidential election of 2005.

People could always post votes if they didn't have access to a scanner, postiing isn't that expensive internationally..

I know there are people who would never give their real name although they are great participants in h2g2.

It doesn't mean you can't forge a signature.
I still think we're going to have to ask for honesty in the first round of voting. Without having a fingerprint/iris scan attached to every log in, there is no foolproof way of knowing if people have multiple accounts.
I don't think this will be a problem. We're all pretty reasonable folk.

Setting some requirements (like mentioned above) to people who want to vote should minimize the threat of people voting more than once.
