I'm sure, as an NPR listener yourself, you get the idea.

Names like Leila Fadel, Don Gonyea, Ina Jaffe, Yuki Noguchi, Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson, Alva Noë, Ofeibea Quist-Arcton, Arun Rath, Aarti Shahani, Lakshmi Singh, Cara Tallo, Anastasia Tsioulcas, Neda Ulaby, Hansi Lo Wang, Linton Weeks, John Ydstie, and Shereen Marisol Meraji would not be incongruent in a sci fi opera.

Y'know, I've long thought that about NPR presenters, reporters and correspondents. It's as if having an unusual name is a job rewuirement, as if it's the first thing recruiters look at on a prospective candidate's CV. John Smith? Nope, that won't do. Zaphod Beeblebrox? Ooh, perfect

There is a Tovia Smith, but no John.

I'm starting to think that all the tinned organic tomatoes in this country must be coming from the same canning facility, no matter which name is on the label. In the past couple of weeks I've found tomatoes in tins (I always buy whole tomatoes, unless I mistakenly pick up the wrong tin and buy diced) from three different brands which still have great lumps of skin on them; something I've never found before, and I use a lot of tinned tomatoes. Have done for several years.

There aren't many things that evoke powerful memories of a 1960s childhood like the sound of burnt toast being scraped.

I may have told this story before, but this reminds me of that crappy little apartment I had in the mid 90s until I got my current job. The walls were quite thin, (one "wall" dividing my apartment from the one to the right of mine was a hollow core door painted to match). The neighbor to my left was gone for a week and her college age daughter was pet/flat sitting. One a weekday evening she and her boyfriend had quite a night according to the sounds I could hear through the walls. I had to work early in the morning so it was a bit annoying, but I'm typically not one to complain, especially about "young love". But at 3:00 in the morning, when the young suitor pulled out his guitar and starting playing love ballads, I'd had enough.

I banged on the wall and shouted, "She already ed you, you don't need to serenade her again!"

After some raucous giggling, (from both sides of the wall) they quieted down for the night.

But it's always worth hearing again

It's 1.40am. My alarm is set for 5.20am. Am I in bed asleep? Am I heck as like. Eating cashews and drinking whiskey.
