Men in Black

I can watch Tommy Lee Jones till I fall off the chair. Will Smith not so much. I need to see No Country again, and Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. I see there's going to be a MiB III soon.

Have you seen Nate and Hayes? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085994/

I saw this repeatedly when I was in high school. It was on cable for quite a while and if I saw it was on, I'd watch it again (something I still do with Kelly's Heroes). It's a pirate romp, a precursor to Pirates of the Caribbean. But without the CGI, shot on location in the South Pacific. Tommy Lee Jones makes an excellent pirate captain.

The Queen

I'll never get tired of this film, as long as I don't watch it every week. It's so well put together and, allowing for artistic licence, captures the mood and feeling of an extraordinary seven days as well as I think it could be. Helen Mirren deserved that Oscar.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Two hours just isn't long enough to tell this story and have it make any kind of sense. The BBC took four hours over it. I really need to read the book, but I won't do that just now because they've probably repackaged it on the back of the film with images of the film stars on the cover, and put the price up. I'll wait for those copies to start showing up in Half Price Books smiley - tongueout

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three

I'm finding these days that I'm watching more and films for the last time. Films that I used to love and might have counted in my list of favourites, and I think this is one of them. It's still a fine film, but boy is it dated. This was in the days when America knew little of terrorism, except that it was something that happened in other places, so everyone's gung-ho and full of New York attitude. If you're not one of us (and sometimes even if you are) you're a goddamn cockamamie sonofabitch. There are so many 1970s cliches it's hard to keep up with them. It almost makes me want to watch the remake... except for John Travolta, although having just watched the trailer for that one I'm thinking it's going to have just as many contemporary cliches. Denzel might save it though.

So what did you think of Kathy Burke ?

A bit more posh than I was expecting, and not enough onscreen time. There was a touch of Beryl about her characterisation, a little nod to the great actress perhaps, but Kathy definitely made it her own.

Well been a bit of a cinema ferst over the last 10 days.

First up "The Artist" both Mrs Disorganised and myself were keen to see this one with all the hype about it. The photography is support and some great shots and effects, but apart from that, well without giving away the plot, let's just say Gene Kelly did it better.

Next up was The Descendents. I have a love-hate relationship with George Clooney's films, I'm afraid this one falls in the indifferent catagory. It was well acted, but frankly there wasn't enough story to support a film of this length.

Finally took the kids to see "War Horse". Best film of the lot, and the horses in it deserve some kind of award because they are fantastic. The story is fairly predictable, but has the quality of good children's writing. Sentimental without being mawkish.

And since there are no Draughthouses within 50 miles (and 90 minutes of traffic) near me, I don't go at all anymore. I really don't want to go to jail.

As I was reading that article, I suspected that I wouldn't have been so reserved. I'm pretty sure I would have loudly STFUed that woman. I'm not sure how I would react to someone putting their feet on me though. smiley - huh

I think a nationwide movement needs to begin, shaming cinema managers into doing dealing with this problem because they're really the people who should take care of rowdy customers. After all, if people like you and I (and if I didn't go to the Drafthouse I wouldn't go to the cinema at all) it's their bottom line that's being hit.

Problem is, the idiots have been getting away with it for so long now there's a significant number who think it's the norm, and making them change their ways is going to be difficult and may well end up with with a spike in the number of managers ending up in hospital.

Well it seems I'm totally out of key with the Oscars committee.

So this week I went to see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which frankly does exactly what it says on the tin. Very British, charming, and gentle. I enjoyed it.

We had a big cardboard standing display for this at the cinema a few weeks ago. Stellar cast. It's not released here until May.

The Dark Knight Rises

I finally got around to seeing it, at 3.15 on a Monday afternoon with half a dozen other people in a 200-seat cinema and a couple of beers smiley - cheers

I know it was a good film because I felt drained afterwards, and that means the story has pulled me in and held me there, keeping me (figuratively) on the edge of my seat. There were a few questionable moments, especially Selina's death scene, or rather, death moment. And I didn't have any problems with the film's length.

I did a little double take when Tom Conti showed up smiley - wow I haven't seen him for years. In fact the last time was in a play called Jesus, My Boy in the West End, which must be a good 15 years ago or more. If you haven't seen the film Shirley Valentine, I recommend it.
