If it's dark it must be raining.

*Looks out of the window*

Yep, rain, and lots of it. A squall line associated with a cold front came through almost exactly an hour ago, and although there wasn't much in the way of thunder and lightning there was plenty of rain. It hasn't stopped since then and in a moment or two I'm going to see if the hourly total has been posted yet at the Camp Mabry reporting station (it gets put up at 51 minutes past the hour).

Wow, 0.56" in one hour. That's small potatoes though compared to some of the weather reports I've just heard. To our immediate north in Williamson County they've been getting 2-4" an hour, and up towards Waco, one small area around Killeen has had 8" of rain this evening! That's on top of a similar amount they had less than a week ago, so there's some flooding going on up there right now.

Looks like it's going to be a wet Memorial Day weekend with a better than 50% chance for storms and rain every day until next Tuesday or Wednesday. Should keep the temperatures fairly mild though, if a little humid.

I woke up at about 6.30 this morning and I could hear a noise outside - thought it was maybe a neighbour's a/c unit running although it didn't sound quite right. Then I came out from underneath the pillow and thought 'That sounds like rain - heavy rain'. I looked out though the blinds and saw a lake outside my window smiley - wow We've had almost 2" of rain since about 3am and it's only just stopped - just in time for me to head off to work.

Rain?... don't talk to me about rain. smiley - cross

I've just got back from an extended weekend (Thurs - Mon) Motorcycle camping holiday.

Luckily my ride from Galveston to Lake Corpus Christi was dry. Those that rode down Friday had some awful conditions to ride in. Friday morning lakeside 8:00am... GALE! Pissing down with high winds flattening my tent and blowing rain in through the zipper. The rain didn't let up until nearly 2:00pm. Everything was blown around and wet. A tree limb missed my tent by only a foot or so. Saturday had intermittent showers but not nearly as bad as Friday. Sunday, most of the guys not trailering their bikes left and rode directly into another frog-strangler. One of the guys went off the road but didn't wreck luckily. The rain was so thick he couldn't see the turn. Back at camp that evening the campground staff was warning everyone that there was a storm with 75 mph winds headed our way. Either they exaggerated or it missed us. The winds didn't get as bad as they were Friday morning but we all had a look of dread as we watched the storm pass. Monday early I packed my things and headed off. I managed to dodge most of the rainstorms until around the Wharton/El Campo area about half-way home. The worst was when I was within 30 minutes of home on the beltway/toll-road surrounding Houston. At the toll booth I got rain inside my helmet visor and had very limited visibility for the rest of the ride even after the rain let up.

Oh... and the worst of it... I burned the trouser leg of my foul weather gear I was so proud of getting off my bike when I got it back in the shed at home. smiley - grrsmiley - bleepsmiley - crosssmiley - bleepsmiley - starsmiley - dragon

Well, it's happened again. A huge storm, the size of four counties, has been moving amoeba-like from north to south across central Texas this morning, with some ferocious thunderstorms at its leading edge. At around 8am it had Austin firmly in its sights, but as it reached the city limits it started to indent, as if this amoeba had suddenly come upon something it really didn't want to touch and moved its outer edge away so that it could work around it. I went outside and looked off to the west where the storm was and saw some intense lightning among the towering clouds. We, on the other hand, have had just a few spots of rain.

Hit 90F/32.2C yesterday.

Holy moly! We've just had the most incredible thunderstorm. An inch and a third of rain in one hour, lightning so constant it turned night into day - it was like being in a room with a flickering fluorescent tube, and that meant almost continuous thunder of course, and winds so strong that the trees were bending over at an alarming angle. It's still raining but it's let up immensely since an hour ago. There's more rain to come for an hour or two according to the radar and we're under a flash flood watch and severe thunderstorm watch until 2am.

And the temperature has dropped from 88 (31.1) to 68 (20) in a matter of two hours smiley - bigeyes

We had a warmish 89/31.7 today and at 11pm it's a balmy 75/23.9. We're looking at low to mid 90s for the next week or so with no apparent chance of rain. That means the allergens are going to be stratospheric smiley - sadface

And the crickets have started chirping at last smiley - biggrin

We got up to 93/38.9 today but it felt considerably warmer with the humidity. Even now, at almost 11pm, it's still 85/29.4, but the 80% RH is making it feel like 96/35.6, so the heat index this afternoon must have been more than 100.

We didn't get very wet - only 0.19" worth, but there was some mice thunder and lightning and it brought the temperature down from 88/31.1 to 72/22.2 in less than two hours smiley - biggrin

We got up to 94/34.4 today and yesterday. Yep, summer is a-comin' in.

There's some very nasty-looking weather developing to our north west and moving this way. Judging by its distance, the speed it seems to be moving and the current time (11.30pm), I'd say it's going to drop in on us right in the middle of the damn night again smiley - cross And unless it dissipates (as it so often does), I think we're in for some serious stormage.

I got woken up twice in the night by rain battering on my front window and the report from Camp Mabry says we got 0.3", but the timing seems way off. When I looked at the radar before going to bed it seemed to me that rain would hit within an hour or two, but according to the records it didn't start falling until almost dawn. It sure didn't feel that late when I was woken up.

It's overcast today, which is keeping the temperatures at least 10°F cooler than Friday afternoon, thank Bob, but the rain chances have diminished until late this evening again, ie when I'll be getting off work.
