New House
Posted May 2, 2003
I've moved into a very nice new house on Dartmoor. The walls are 3 feet thick, and the views are stunning. Lovely log fire too!

Consultants reject new contract.
Posted Oct 31, 2002
Thank God. I rejected it too, by the way.
We're all preparing for the government spin machine to rubbish us by saying we actually want even more money than the rise set out in the contract proposal. It is rubbish - what we want is the right to provide patient care based on the needs of the patients, not on government targets which mean nothing and not by managers whose only aim is to meet those targets no matter what.
Plus, we don't think the normal working week should be from 8am - 10pm weekdays and 9am - 1pm weekends. The medical profession already has the highest rate of divorce, and second highest rate of suicide in the UK. This isn't family friendly and will only lead to more and more disheartened doctors.
There has been much spin about the fact that 'greedy' doctors want to do more private practice, and that we don't want to do an extra 8 hours NHS work a week before we do any PP. Approx 20% of consultants have anything other than a token income from PP, and 99% of consultants work in excess of 48 hours a week for the NHS anyway (though they get paid for a lot less).
I beg you all to look past the spin and see the real reason we turned down a substantial pay rise.
