HVS

A place for our members to get to know each other and talk veg. Tell us a little bit about yourself, ask any questions, and meet your fellow vegetarian and vegan researchers.

For instance, where do HVS members come from? What is the diet there like for veggies?

Northern Ireland is still a bit problematic fa=or dining out but it is getting there. Staff canteen is a disgrace though so I'm often restricted to salads. smiley - sadface

~Hurrumph~ You should try living in Lincolnshire... me is sure that most folk have never heard of the word around here... though for anyone living in or near Melton Mowbray... there's a great pub called the Half Moon... me thinks... er... ~sheepish grin~... something to do with a moon anyway.... most likely is the Half Moon... oh well... anyway... tis brilliant... the cooks a veggie... and they even serve decent Vegan food... and the taste is wonderful and the prices are even better... me went there with a party of 5 others... some meat eaters... most not... and the food bill... excluding drinkies... was below £30... and we were all rather full... ~burp!!~ excuse me... ~grin~

My 'best' memory of "not suitable for vegetarians" is going to a staff do at a 'Beefeater' pub (I suppose the name didn't bode well!) and ending up with the ONLY veggie dish on the menu... the side salad!

Admittedly veggie choice has improved in England since then, but it's still often a choice between the menu or THE vegetarian option.

Spud A La Greebo

1 Potato
Nothing else

Turn on oven all the way... need heat... lots of it for this recipe.... turn the knob until it won't budge no further....

Read a book for 10 minutes... any book... Terry Pratchett is good... but not for ten minutes... better get a comic or something... or poetry... bad stuff that bores you...

Take one potato...
Wash it...
Pierce skin with sharp object... (see these claws)
Open oven door... careful this gets tricky now...
Throw potato into oven and quickly close door...

Wait for a few hours... wash hair... clean teeth... mend that hole in your jeans... you know the one in your crotch that you always forget about... until you sit down somewhere... and the person looking at you begins to snigger... and then you remember... anyway.... just do something...

Wait for a smell of burning potato.... you can't miss it... it smells like something veggie burning... er... like a potato or something...

Run to oven...
Open door...
Remove burnt potato...
Place on plate...

And there you have it...

This recipe is absolutely guarenteed to help you lose weight....

~grin~

Don't forget to have a fire extinguisher handy just in case....

And turn off the damn oven...

Hope this helps...

Wolfman, Zaphodista :X (soon to be Zarquon again, or maybe not)

Hi guys. To answer those questions, I'm from Northeast Ohio (USA) and it's a little difficult at times to be a vegetarian but I manage. Most US restraunts have a few vegetarian (but not vegan) options, but the vast majority of items on the menu have meat. As for storebought stuff, I stick with "regular" food that just doesn't have meat in it, as opposed to food that's specifically made for vegetarians (which is in short supply where I live anyway).

Technoyokel, assuming you're a veg, would you like to join us?

My worst experience(s) are whenever I get invited over to eat with my S.O.'s family. They nearly always have some big meat dish for dinner. Generally, there are lots of veggie side dishes that I can almost fill up on, but sometimes not. The other day, the only thing available for me to eat was green beans. smiley - tongueout And then when I tell him I don't like eating over there, he says, "Don't you like them?"

*sigh*

I used to work for a man who seemed to feel it was his duty to wage war on me for being a vegetarian. "It's unnatural" was one phrase I remeber being used.smiley - winkeye

I've never been a 'crusading veggie' - I feel everyone should have the freedom to make their own choices in life and express themselves - but it's weird when you find yourself on the end of a crusading carnivore!smiley - bigeyes
