Someone please remind me why I chose chemistry
Posted Feb 28, 2003
Stuff that's gone wrong with the "wine analysis" project so far:
I left a condenser sitting on the workbench. The rubber tubing fell down and then *crash* it's in pieces on the floor.
I dropped the heating mantle on my tray of glass pipettes. *crunch*
I forgot to standardise the iodine so three hours worth of titrations are rendered completely inaccurate.
Even if I do take these inaccuracies into account, it doesn't explain why my results say that my wine has twice the amount of sulphur dioxide than the legal limit.
My friend told me to watch his experiment while he was out of the room. It fell off the desk and covered the floor in a lurid green poisonous liquid.
I've just spent five hours of the past two days at the back of the Physics lab while the lookalike teacher gives me the evil eye as I wait for the distillation to finish.
And I, um, flooded the aformentioned Physics laboratory. Not much, admittedly, but it did fill a box of electronics with water and soak through all the science jotters of a particularly unlucky class of third years.
On the other hand, my parents and little sis are in Prague this weekend so I have the house completely to myself.

A rare good mood
Posted Jan 18, 2003
1) The letter from Girton came - it's official! I have an offer from Cambridge! It's a conditional, I need to get 3 A's first, but I can worry about that later.
2) My sis is having a sleepover, which not only means that she's kept out of my way for the evening, but that I get free pizza because they ordered far too much. The garlic bread's nice too, but what kind of sick mind puts tuna on pizza?
3) I finally found a download program that works, so I have lots of lovely new music to listen to. Not that I'm advocating illegal downloading, you understand. Don't do it, kids.
4) Sixth year will be over in a few months, and I will never have to see anyone from school again, ever, if I don't want to. I know I shouldn't really be happy about this, but it can't be helped.
5) Tom McRae, Radiohead, Elbow and Buffseeds should be releasing new albums this year.
6) Steven Merritt exists. What d'you mean you've never heard of him? Go listen to The Magnetic Fields. Or Future Bible Heroes. Or the 6ths. and for anyone who can successfully pronounce the names of the 6ths' albums (go on, I dare ya).
7) The thread "Death, why fear it?", which I haven't posted in for at least a year, has amazingly, given the subect matter, spawned (spawned? where'd that word come from? ) a friendship. They just can't stop talking to each other. H2G2's so great for this sort of thing.
8) I passed the tortuous Unit 2 Advanced Higher Chemistry test with 27/30. Take *that* entropy!
9) Two of my friends have made up after their fight and are going out again. It was so weird when they wouldn't talk to each other. It's better now, even if we can't stop them ing in front of us.
10) C'est le weekend!

Waiting over... kinda
Posted Jan 15, 2003
Heard from Cambridge today. Well, I sort of did - Dad phoned Girton up because he thought they'd phoned (we have no answering machine) and they spoke to him, even though they hadn't. (Did that sentence make any sense? ) Anyway, the person he spoke to said they'd be offering me a place! I'm still a bit unsure about it though, I'm still worried that I'll get a letter of rejection because they made a mistake today and I don't really have a place.
Stupid paranoia.
Never mind, it's an excuse for a celebration!

Relief!
Posted Jan 8, 2003
After last week's letter saying that my Cambridge application had been pooled, I've finally heard from the university. Yesterday they managed to get through to me to say that I've got an interview at Girton - on Friday. I'm a lot less nervous this time, for some reason, but I think I still want to get a place. We'll see - I'll post again on Friday night when I'm back home.
